River view

Restoran Makanan Laut River View: For a Good River view

In the town of Pasir Penambang, there are a number of restaurants. One of them with a good view of the river is River View Restaurant. Set on a large wooden platform, it is open on two sides, allowing a good view of the Kuala Selangor bridge and river and nearby fishing village.

There were a number of tourists at this restaurant.

Favorite Dish: Excellent steamed white pomfret (bawal) -the sauce was clear, piquant and spicy, simply delicious!!

We ordered the set meal for 5 adults, 3 big kids and 3 little kids. Total bill which included several soft drinks and Chinese tea = RM198.50 (US$50)

The set meal came with steamed pomfret, braised large prawns, fried oyster ommelette, deep fried mantis prawns, flower crabs with butter sauce, fried asparagus, rice & jelly for desert. The food was fresh, but cooking style rather average, except for the pomfret & crabs, which were delicious.

Crabs!!! - Negeri Selangor

Crabs!!!

Kang Guan Seafood Restaurant, Pulau Carey: Carey Island Seafood - Fresh & Inexpensive!

We visit this place at least twice a year. Last visit was in October 2007. Next visit shall be July 2008. It remains a good place to visit-with good, reasonably priced seafood.

This is a pleasant restaurant by the riverside at Carey Island (Pulay Carey). It's interior is cool and comfortable(although a bit dark...but you can still see your food)

This restaurant has been here for years, started out as a shack and expanded. It is quite famous in its own right. Tour groups from out of town do drop by - I've seen people coming in bus loads-not kidding!!

Those working in neighbouring factories in Teluk Panglima Garang (eg. Toshiba) and Klang also drop by here for lunch.

Favorite Dish: Kam Heong styled fried Crabs **
Sweet and Sour & Chilli Crab
Deepfried Soft-shell crabs **
Steamed Prawns
Braised Fish Maw and mushrooms with beancurd**
Deep-fried Mango Fish**
Steamed Fish
Deep-fried Mantis Prawns in sweet sauce
Prawns in Assam (Spicy Tamarind) Sauce**
2 types of Vegetables
Rice
Tea
Coconut Juice (RM3.50 each and VERY SWEET)
** very very excellent

Total bill for 10 adults and 5 kids, and 2 young kids = RM370 (actually we could not finish all the food, so we asked for a "doggie bag/ta pau"...and had the crabs for dinner LOL) %s

Address: Just before the Bridge to Carey Island

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: On LDP, after Sunway Toll, exit "Klang/ Subang", (KESAS highway). Follow this road (pass USJ, Kota Kemuning, & 2 tolls) then exit at the BANTING/KLANG exit. Keep driving & you will come to a roundabout "Pulau Carey".

posing by the lake - Negeri Selangor

posing by the lake

Venezular Restaurant, Casa Venicia Club House: Good food by the Lake

Located within a Condominium complex with its own lake (a’ la Venice), this restaurant serves good food at reasonable prices. The night we visited it had the look of a home-styled place that was beloved among locals (especially those living in the Selayang area). In fact, I only found out about this place due to the recommendation of VT’er and food lover, audrey118.

Normally, when I visit a restaurant with my family, we usually order very 'standard - but - classic "can’t - go-wrong" Cantonese dishes, rather than anything that sounds too fancy. Well, the good news is that this restaurant does the standard but classic dishes very well indeed, which I consider is a mark of a good, reliable restaurant. Having said that, I noticed that they also had some house specialities which I didn’t try, but they looked very good, such as the Thai rojak/salad.

We noticed that the people at the next table had brought their own bottles of Australian red and were chatting and laughing loudly throughout the night. In summary, this is just the sort of restaurant to bring your friends and relatives if you plan to have a relaxing evening, without too many frills.

Favorite Dish: The ubiquitious Claypot Tau Foo (Beancurd), was cooked with good sized prawns, scallops and crunchy broccoli, slices of carrots and cauliflower all served up in a sizzling hot claypot. You can choose the type of tau foo that you prefer and we chose white Chinese tau foo, rather than Japanese tau foo (soft tau foo with egg). The gravy was simply scrumptious, and had us reaching for a second serving of steamed white rice. Probably the long drive had also made us all very hungry!

Whole kampung Chicken steam-baked with Chinese herbs had a terrific aroma when it was brought to the table, and the succulent white flesh of the chicken literally fell off the chicken bones. My children and I especially enjoyed the drumsticks and the gravy had me reaching for even more steamed rice.

Romaine lettuce hot-woked with fu-yee (fermented beancurd) and garlic was crunchy & delicious. It was a hit and snapped up in seconds.

Lala Clams fried with garlic, were a bit too small but still quite tasty.

Crabs-we ordered 1.5 kg in kam-heong style. It was quite tasty, but as this dish arrived last, we were too full to finish it and had to doggie-bag the rest. Actually it tasted even better the next day and we even fought over the left-overs. The crabs were RM40 per kilo and each crab was around 600 grams, so there was plenty.

Total bill for 4 adults, 2 big & 1 small kid was approx RM150.

Opening Hours
The restaurant is open daily for lunch & dinner but closed for Lunch on Sundays, and closed for Dinner on Tuesdays and Fridays. Call ahead to make reservations and to pre-order your food (day before or on the same day) and you’ll be served faster.

Beggars Chicken anyone? - Negeri Selangor

Beggars Chicken anyone?

New Beggar's Delicious Restaurant: A Treat for Big Eaters!

This slightly out of the way restaurant is known to foodies only through word-of-mouth. I came to know of this place through a friend of mine who is part of a regular "gourmet group" or self-confessed "gluttons" who spend their weekends tracking down places for good food at reasonable prices.

So, what is this restaurant like?

Well, for one thing, it is located in the middle of an oil palm estate. There is no restaurant signage, because the restaurant occupies the bit of land right next door to a owner's house.
You can order ala carte or take the set menu - which is what I did, since unfortunately, my Cantonese is rather limited.
The service is brisk and businesslike but not fancy.

You need to order at least 1 day in advance through the telephone. They only open for dinners on Wednesdays, Saturdays & Sundays (from 5pm onwards). Contact Mr Tee, phone number provided below.

To watch the Fire flies at Kuala Selangor, you would need to drive further one for about another 30 to 40 minutes.

Favorite Dish: Set Menu for 10 people (all big eaters preferably...)

Glutinous rice with salted egg yolks, chunks of marinated pork, Chinese mushrooms**
Beggars Chicken (The chicken is stuffed with aromatic Chinese herbs, wrapped in aluminium foil, before being encased in clay and baked in a hot oven for 4 hours)
Beggars Duck** (similar to the chicken, but with the addition of a different types of herbs with a brownish sauce. After being cooked for so long, the duck meat was so tender, it literally fell off the bone...I am quite partial to duck.)
Beggars Pork Trotters with chunks of yam * (I am partial to yam)
Steamed fish - Thai Style ** (the fish was fresh and sauce was tangy and piquant)
Wok tossed Large prawns ** (good sized prawns - very fresh! Cooked in dark sauce with a tinge of spicy chilli)
Crabs in spicy Kam Heong style (very fresh, very meaty)**
Green lettuce with oyster sauce
Pork stomach soup with pepper*

Address: Ijok, about 1 km before Ijok rest area

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: On the LDP, pass the toll (near Ikea) follow the signs to Kuala Selangor (highway 54), continue along this road. After Malaysian Sheet Glass and Desa Coalfields housing estate, look out for signs to this restaurant on your left.

waiter, get me the bill please. - Negeri Selangor

waiter, get me the bill please.

Restoran Happy Village: Delicious home-styled cooking-just like mum's!

If you are ever out near Shah Alam or Klang, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to Chinese food. My colleagues introduced me to a great place at the edge of Berkeley Garden and Taman Rasna Klang.

The delightful of scent of freshly steamed fish with ginger wafts through the air as you walk towards the restaurant. A favourite among locals and office workers from as far of as Shah Alam and Batu Tiga, it is always crowded on weekends. There is the ground floor and first floor, both of which are air-conditioned. With nary a table cloth in sight, it is a place where the emphasis is strictly on the food!

Favorite Dish:

"Tau Foo Kang" (Claypot Crabmeat & Tafu soup) **
This dish tasted like a poor man’s shark’s fin, but without the shark’s fin! It had a good mouth-feel & was simply delicious with a dash of black vinegar.

Pak Cham Kai The chicken pieces were tiny (“kampong kai?, we speculated”), but the sauce was light and the chicken tender & succulent.

Braised Asparagus with golden needle mushroom-an unusual dish which I quite enjoyed

Steamed Pork with Yam in foil** – wow, what a delicious dish! The meat was so soft, it literally fell off the bones, and blended perfectly with the pieces of yam. I felt that the meat pieces could have been a bit chunkier though.

Steamed fish tail with minced ginger and superior say sauce***

Sweet potato leaves with sambal sauce

Total including some fresh young coconut juice, rice and towels = RM171.90 for 8

Address: 39 Jalan Satu, Kawasan 16, Bekerley 41300 Klang

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: Along the Federal Highway heading to Klang. After the Sg Rasau toll, look for the first roundabout (before Klang bridge). Take the 7 o' clock turn and then first left into the shop houses that face the highway.

a tropical setting - Negeri Selangor

a tropical setting

Telok Gong Seafood Restaurant: Telok Gong Seafood- Part 2: Ambiance & Food

I really liked the ambiance of this restaurant. It does try hard to look & feel like a tropical seafood restaurant should.

Set within a grove of short yellow coconut & yellow palm trees, its perimeter fencing is marked by mature cocoa plants. The shady trees help to keep the temperature down and discerning patrons prefer to dine al-fresco, within medium-sized huts with tatched nipah roofs. There is also a large air-conditioned section for those who really cannot take the noon-day heat.

Favorite Dish:

Here's what we had for lunch:
Fried Lala Meehoon -very tasty!
(that's why we ordered a second plate)
Steamed fresh prawns with rice wine and egg white-the sauce was so yummy with white rice
Salt baked whole kampung chicken-not too salty, not too soft, it was just right.
Sweet potato leaves, lightly wok-fried with garlic slices-tasty and not oily
Wok-fried cos lettuce-tasty and not oily
Bamboo lala (clams) : kam heong style- slightly spicy and very tasty
With some rice and chinese tea, and a 5% tax, our total bill was RM163.38

Service: At times, it is hard to attract the attention of a waiter, however, we did not have to wait long for the food. The "captains" only take orders for food. For topping up of drinks & ice, you need to go to the middle "island-tent" or serve yourself from the large hot-water pot near the "island-tent"

We also ordered 2 kg of meat (mud) crabs, but after waiting for some time, were informed that the delivery of crabs was late! that was a dissapointment. Well, it was Father's Day, so, I guess the crabs were a popular item.

Teluk Gong Seafood restaurant - Negeri Selangor

Teluk Gong Seafood restaurant

Telok Gong Seafood Restaurant: Telok Gong Seafood- Part 1: How to get there

This drive will take about 40 – 50 minutes from Petaling Jaya.

Take the Sunway LDP and drive pass the large white tollgate. Immediately after this tollgate, look out for Exit 1113B on your left. It is the second exit. This exit loops down onto the KESAS Highway to Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam, Banting, Port Klang & Westport (Pelabuhan Barat).

Drive past two more tolls, and keep on driving until the highway ends (“lebuhraya tamat”). On the left and right there are a few housing developments and ahead of you, a large flyover is being constructed. In the meantime, a temporary round-about has been created and there are traffic lights to control traffic flow. Look out for a couple of small road signs and the exit to Teluk Gong is clearly marked. Take the second left exit (immediately before the end of the round-about) which leads to Telok Gong.

Favorite Dish: Drive past the entrance of Glenmarie Cove (a large scale housing development) and continue along this rather dusty road. You will drive pass by two large seafood restaurants on your left, keep going till you see signs. If driving at night-time, watch out for the bright lights. During the day, there are signboards put up by the various restaurant owners.

Please continue reading to know more about this great restaurant. I've put the transport tip here instead of under transportation for your easy reference. Furthermore, Negeri Selangor is quite a large state and you don't want to get lost, do you? : )
