Hai Peng Coffee Shop: Don't miss the Best Coffee on the East Coast
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Hai Peng Coffee Shop

    A Taste of Nostalgia

The look and feel of an old kopi-tiam (Chinese coffee shop) with authentic furniture and best of all, the coffee is freshly brewed, smells good and the price is very reasonable. Attracts an eclectic crowd of engineering & technical crew from the nearby Paka & Kertih powerstations, Petronas staff from Kertih, local Malays and Chinese families and couples, and tourists who have heard about the famous Hai Peng Coffee.

Besides coffee, this cafe also serves a range of kuih-muih and local food-all at reasonable prices. (by KL standards would be considered cheap).

You can buy their coffee (3-in-1, 2-in-1, or coffee powder), or kaya to take-away.

Doing great business at all hours of the day-we drove past a few times and visited it twice during our week's stay in Terengganu-its success speaks for itself and is well deserved! Friendly & helpful staff are always on standby to serve you with a smile.

Favorite Dish: Everything is pretty good but don't miss:
French Toast served with home made Kaya (a type of local egg and coconut "jam")
Hai Peng Special (Coffee with raw cocoa)-robust, smells good, but with only a hint of bitterness-around RM2.90
Old-fashioned Charcoal Toast served with Kaya - either thick slices of bread or cute buns - they're both good!
Ice-Blended with cute names-around RM5.90-(good value and can give my favourite Coffee Bean's ice blended a run for its money)

Restoran Tong Juan-Part 1: Delicious Seafood-at reasonable prices
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Restoran Tong Juan-Part 1

There are 4 to 5 seafood restaurants at the main riverfront area of Cukai on Jalan Sulaimani. They all specialise in Stuffed Crab. We chose the one that was the most crowded. Great decision as it turns out!

Favorite Dish: BBQ Tiger Prawns-RM80 per kilo (we had two large ones-see pics) that set us back by only RM40 (about US$10)!! see pics for how large they were
Tau foo (soft white beancurd) fried with vegetables-RM8

Restaurant Tong Juan-Part II: Great Seafood at reasonable Prices

Following on from above, this is my second tip on the same restaurant because we visited twice. The food was GOOD and priced reasonably both times.

To be fair, there are many other restaurants along this row at Cukai, all facing the riverfront. The other one that came highly reccomended is Restaurant Malaysia but we didn't have the opportunity to check it out.

Favorite Dish: Everything was delicious, but you may want to check out:
Fresh Lobster Grilled with Garlic Butter-nnnnnnyyyummmmmmy! RM90 per kilo, the one in the picture was just over 1 kilo and cost us RM117
    Vegetables-RM8 per plate
    Fishball & vege soup-RM8

We also tried the famous stuffed crab-nice but not exciting for me. However, an excellent choice and highly recommended for those who are too lazy to peel their own crabs! LOL

Medan Selera Meraga Beris: Visit the Warungs (stalls) for home-styled cooking
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Medan Selera Meraga Beris

A number of Warung are located at this Medan Selera-a type of foodcourt. I visited warung 4 (in the middle) and the one at the end (facing the warungs, on the extreme right).
The food tastes pretty good but can be rather spicy and sometimes too sweet for me. If in doubt, ask them to cut out all the cilli and sugar.
All the stalls here are family run and serve basically the same menu. Fried noodles, fried rice, chicken rice, fried eggs, soup (chicken, vegetables or tulang/bone), daging/beef or chicken or sotong/squid(can be done with masak kicap/dark soy sauce, masak merah/red sauce, masak pedas/hot sauce, goreng/deep fried).

Favorite Dish: Nasi Goreng Kampung-RM3 per plate
Nasi Goreng Cina-for those who want their fried rice unspicy-RM3 per plate
    Daging Masak Merah-RM3 per plate
(pieces of beef fried with tomato and fresh pounded chillies and onions)
    Kway Teow Goreng-RM3 per plate
    Fresh Coconut-RM2 each

Service can be a bit slow, so set your expectations right-anyway, you're on holiday, aren't you?

MacDonalds, Kertih: For an alternative flavour...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: MacDonalds, Kertih

When in Terengganu and you simply can't please the kids or just have a craving for some "western" food - why not go to the nearest MacDonalds, one such outlet is located at Kertih, the town which oil refining built.

There is also a number of Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets (known as KFC in Malaysia) - one at the shophouses at the front of Awana Kijal Resort and another was at Cukai town.

An A&W outlet can also be found at Cukai. At A&W, the emphasis is on fried chicken, coney dogs, waffles, ice-cream floats and burgers.

Favorite Dish: Burgers and more burgers. Quarter-pounder with cheese! Burgers priced around RM4.50 each, and a value meal, including a drink and fries is around RM8-9.00
Sometimes they have specials and the price of a burger can be as low as RM2.50 each!

    Opening hours:
    8 am to midnight, daily
