Getting TO/AROUND: Driving around Malaysia is easy and fun ~ if you have a car to get around. If you don't, then catch the Express Buses (although some of the drivers can drive maniacally fast and you do so at your own risk!)
Malaysian Highways and Expressways are well maintained and in good conditions~thanks to PLUS, LITRAK and a number of other private highway concessionaires who own the right to charge road users a toll.
The PLUS Highway (also called the North-South Highway) takes you from
Penang in the North, through
Kuala Lumpur in the middle all the way to
Johor in the South of Peninsular Malaysia.
The East-Coast expressway has also recently come up and now you can drive all the way from KL to Kuantan in 2-3 hours.
There are different toll pricing for different expressways and convenient stops along the way. The highways and expressways have made domestic tourism a weekend past-time among locals and tourists alike.
Note: Speeding is dangerous and the speed limit on highways and expressways range from 90 km/h to 110 km/h. On certain stretches of trunk roads (which link the smaller towns and villages), the speed limit is set at 60 km/h.
Despite the somewhat poor or misleading road signages, it isn't that difficult to get around. Afterall, isn't getting lost half the fun? Keep a map handy for emergencies.
