Lighthouse - Morib

Lighthouse

The Lighthouse

Atop the hill that can be seen from the Chinese temple stands a lighthouse. It is one of the few that are still in working order in Malaysia.

The road to the top of the hill is a popular spot among locals for their morning walk or an evening jog. The view from the top is worth the walk although it is also possible to drive up.

When we were near there, the air quality was good due to there being very few cars in the area. Most of the locals use motorbikes or bicycles to get around.

Morib Beach - Morib

Morib Beach

Enjoy the Beach

Grab a swim suit or just jump in with your long track-pants and a t-shirt. This neighbourhood local beach is not really famous for its clear blue water, but it is good enough for the kids to have a splash around.

When we were there, the tide was very high, but apparently when it is low tide, you would need to walk out on flat sand about 400 meters to get to the water. At low tide, you can try to catch little crabs and and pick up the shells left behind by the tide.

After enjoying the beach, do make time to take a drive to the nearby historical sights such as the previous Sultan of Selangor's old palace, his Majesty's Mausoleom and the Old Mosque - they are all in the same general direction, in the town of JUGRA, about 10 km from Morib.

A Chinese Temple - Morib
A Chinese Temple

After visiting the Mausoleum of the Sultan continue along this road and you will come to a small but beautiful Chinese temple. It is in bright red and stands alone on the side of the road.

Across the road from this temple there is a rather famous restaurant that specialises in Beggar's Chicken and Beggar's Fish at reasonable prices. Pre-ordering is required as these dishes take 3-4 hours to prepare. The restaurant is open from 12 noon till 8pm.

Royal Mausoleum - Morib

Royal Mausoleum

Sultan Abdul Samad's Mausoleum

The hills and rain forest around the quiet town of Jugra have been maintained as a forest reserve thus giving the area a quiet and stately charm that hints of its days when it was the centre of power for the Selangor sultanate.

Drive up the hill on a tree-lined road and past a scattering of well-maintained traditional kampung houses set amidst durian orchards, and you'll arrive at the Sultan's Royal Mausoleum which sits grandly and serenely at the top of one of several hills in the area.

Built in 1898, the Royal Mausoleum of Sultan Abdul Samad is a combination of different types of architecture that include Western Classical and Indo-Muslim. The past Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Abdul Samad and members of the royal family were laid to rest here.

The picture shows the entrance to the Mausoleum and not the Mausoleum itself.

Address: Jugra town, on top of a hill

Directions: Not far from Banting town and Morib-ask the locals or follow the signs.

have a picnic - Morib

have a picnic

A good place for a Picnic

At this old-style beach there is a large amount of shady, grassy areas suitable for a picnic.

If you didn’t bring any food from home you’ll have no difficulty buying snacks and drinks from the stalls nearby. Finally, after all that munching and your tummy's all full, surely there's no better time to have a siesta…

Hang out with your Friends

Another interesting feature of Morib beach is the covered structure that looked like a mini Roman amphitheatre. It had a circular stage area in the middle and the words “JOM KARAOKE” hand-printed in large lettering on a sign against the wall. I guess that weekends may see group karaoke sessions being held here and this would be just the place to hang out with your friends.

In the absence of such organized fun, why not just plonk yourself and your pals down on the grass under a shady casuarina tree and start singing like the people in the pics did?

white sands - Morib

White Sands

To our pleasant surprise the sand here was incredibly white and fine, making it a pleasure to walk on it barefoot. However our joy was shortlived as parts of the beach was marred by plastic bottles and discarded foam boxes, and other litter.

Nonetheless, the kids enjoyed picking up shells and playing with the sand.

Fishing - Morib

Fishing

Fishing

There were a few people using home-made fishing poles to fish here. One guys I saw was armed with some fresh squid as bait which he had spread out on a sheet of newspaper.

At another spot another lady, her white tudung fluttering in the wind, perched on top of the crumbling retaining wall holding on to her fishing pole while her two sons fought over a single black rubber tube that bounced with the waves.

Flying high - Morib

Flying high

Kite Flying is Popular Here

We saw lots of adult and children flying kites here under the shady trees and around the playground. Our friend who had grew up nearby told us that kite-flying had been popular even back when he was a young boy. It appears to me that the sea-breeze was strong enough to make kite flying easy and fun. Fortunately, not strong enough to blow my hat away! LOL

For those without a kite, despair not, as there were vendors selling small, colourful kites which were suitable for a novice kite flyer.

Istana Bandar - Morib

Istana Bandar

Istana Bandar

The small town of JUGRA was once the seat of power for the Selangor Sultanate but is now a collection of kampungs, durian & mangosteen orchards, coconut and palm oil estates. It is only a short drive from the town of Banting or the seaside beach of Morib.

Istana Bandar was built in 1905 (some sources quote 1915) by Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Shah, the fifth Sultan of Selangor. It has 15 rooms and is made of wood and marble. Sultan Alauddin himself, who also bore the cost of constructing the palace, designed this palace where he lived for 35 years until his death in 1938.

The eighth sultan of Selangor, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who died a few years ago was born in the palace. The current Sultan resides at a newer Palace in Klang town.

The grass within the palace grounds need a trim & the outer walls are in need of a fresh coat of paint, but otherwise, Istana Bandar is in good condition and its white walls with briliant royal yellow trim twinkled the evening sun.

Address: Jugra town, near a small school

Directions: Follow the signs or ask the locals. It is about 10 km from Banting town.
