a fishing village, an Int'l Resort? what is it?

Drop by on your way to Redang

at Tanjung Jara Beach
Kuala Terengganu is a small rural town on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The airport serves as the gateway to Pulau Redang. The people are warm, but extremely conservative.

The markets and shops in town are worth a visit, for salt fish, anchovies and hand-drawn batik cloths and local handicraft. You certainly won't pay tourist prices if you are a smart shopper.

Tips on Dressing: When you are here, it is best to dress conservatively and modestly, with pants below knee level, do not wear shorts at public places, and shirts or t-shirts should have sleeves.

Dresses & skirts are okay, but hemlines should be below the knees where possible. Although Malaysia is a developed nation, many of the rural folk are very conservative and may not have come across any Caucasian people before, so you will subject yourself to a lot of unwanted attention (I've had friends complain about people who openly stare or gawk because they have not seen people with blond hair!) if your dressing is perceived to lack modesty!

Yes, by all means, you can wear your mini-skirts, shorts & t-shirts or swimsuits, even bikinis (see pics!)! But only at resorts and hotels, please. Topless bathing is not permitted - you will probably get arrested...

Alcohol and cigarettes are only available for sale at selected Chinese outlets. Best to buy them at KLIA (duty free) before you get here!!

If you have some time, don't miss out on Tanjung Jara Resort, a luxurious property about an hour away from Kuala Terengganu. Get a very special deal during the monsoon period.

Pros:"pleasant town, slow pace which is relaxing"
Cons:"nothing much to see or do, people may gawk at you"
In A Nutshell:"sleepy fishing town on the East Coast"
