Things To Do: Where to go, what to do? Where do I start?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hey, you're at Taman Negara and as the tagline goes : It's a Jungle out there!

Why not take a look at the useful signpost and decide where you want to go and what you want to do. Would you like to go for a jungle trek? perhaps a river safari? cave exploration, shoot the rapids, picnic by the waterfall? canopy walkway, climb up Teresek Hill?

Well, take a look and decide for yourself!

Things To Do: At the Lata Berkoh Waterfall
  • Tip Rating:
  • We took a boat from Mutiara Taman Negara to Lata Berkoh. Upon reaching the site it was already about 5 pm in the evening. To be honest, our initial reaction was one of dismay because the river looked quite brown and muddy. The tour guide explained that it was a common problem due to the rains which dislodge the mud, making the water at and around the waterfalls look rather muddy.

After we got off the boats, we took a short trek through the rain forest and we were led to this place which is the main part of the waterfall. The Lata Berkoh waterfall was lovely! Not muddy at all. Most people were not dressed to take the plunge, but as we had about an hour here, a few in the group did wade into the waterfalls fully clothed.

After a bit of exploration around on the rocks, my pals and I sat around taking pictures of each other (what else is new?), and later on started splashing each other. he he he.

Beware, the rocks can be slippery and dangerous-do exercise due care.

    Things To Do: Jungle Trekking
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are numerous walks or jungle treks that you can do when you are at Taman Negara. We were staying at the Mutiara Resort and from there, the sign board (per my first tip) showed the various treks that one could take from the resort. There are long and short treks.

Warning: If you are not familiar with the area, please do bring a friend or two along. For the lesser used paths, do bring along a local guide.

The jungles can be trecherous and those who stray from the paths, can and get lost. Bring along a bottle of drinking water. You will need it for sure.

Things To Do: Take a Walk on the Canopy Walkway
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taman Negara - High up above the tree tops

  • One of the attractions at Taman Negara is the canopy walkway.

There is usually a huge crowd around the walkway, and it is advisable to go early to "book" your spot. The reason for the crowd is that only limited numbers of people are allowed on the walkway - this is to ensure your safety and also because of on-going checks and maintenance of the walkways. There is a small fee to be paid to go on the walkways. I don't think you can buy the ticket in advance, and usually, you can only pick up the entrance ticket on the spot.

Things To Do: View from above
  • Tip Rating:
  • When walking on the canopy walkway you get to stop at each of the "stations" or platforms before moving along. As mentioned previously, only a few people are allowed on the bridge at any one time, and a certain interval is required before the next person can step on. There are forest rangers monitoring that this rule is never broken and that no one tries to do anything funny or dangerous when on the walkway.

One such station is shown in the picture and this one is probably among the best sites for a photograph. The view of the Tahan River and the surrounding jungle from this spot is remarkable. I took a couple of pictures, but I wasn't able to stay for long as there were many people waiting for their turn.

Things To Do: Climb up Teresek Hill (344 Meters)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take a jungle trek up Teresek hill. I can't remember how long it was, but it was not that difficult- as long as you take it at your own pace. In our group, a 60 year old gentleman made it to the top and was in fact leading us for most of the journey. Obviously he was very fit because not everyone made it to the very top though and some people turned back or stopped part way.

The trail was a combination of walking and up hill trekking, and muddy and slippery in some parts. Good walking shoes are necessary and do take care not to sprain your ankle.

At the top of Teresek Hill (344 m above sea level), you have a view of Gunung Tahan (2,187m) in the distance- if it is a clear day. Gunung Tahan is the highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia.

    Things To Do: Shooting rabbits?
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the activities that is advertised as part of any tour to Taman Negara is rapid shooting. I didn't really know what it was, and guess what: someone in my group, asked this question:
"Are there rabbits in Taman Negara?"
    my reply:
    "no, why do you ask?"

    her response:
"Because the itinerary says that there will be rabbit shooting."

    My response:
"!! ermh, no, there are no rabbits. and I am quite sure we won't be shooting them here!!"

Things To Do: Shooting the Rapids
  • Tip Rating:
  • Shooting the rapids is definitely something of an attraction at Sungei Tembeling, Taman Negara. Everyone has a different experience depending on the time of year because of the different height of the river and also the strength of the current.

There are seven rapids up to Kuala Tahan, up stream of Sungei Tembeling. We sat in a long boat (as pictured) and our boatman negotiated the rapids. To make things more exciting, the boatmen would race against one another.

Our group was sort of dissapointed because the river boat ride was nice, but unexciting. Some people started to chat and a few asked the boatman when the ride would end and what else there was to see or do.

The boatman then asked us to hand him our valuables (eg cameras), which we did. He stored them right in front of the boat, next to him. Next thing you know, he stroked the river very hard and all of us seated in the front few rows were absolutely soaked through. Not to be outdone, we use our hands and started paddling towards the back. In less than a minute, the entire 20 something of us in the boat, was soaked right through!

So much for shooting the rapids. LOL

D, this woodlands resort looks like a nice new joint. Will consider this next time I go there. How's Taman Negara these days, further land developments?

This looks like a great place to enjoy nature. It is a shame that we ran out of time and didn't get there. I like your photos and tips.
