X-mas Street Market: Flowers & Fruit

With Christmas time the neighbourhood of "Moerweg" in The Hague is a very popular place to do your shoppings. It is because here the original The Hague spheres still survived and the people around love to have a little chat with you ...

What to buy: Find the street-markets here and do have fun with the Dutch Christmas dude, especially the one from the Flowers & Fruits. They are so funny and the street-stalls do look so glittering ... yep, it's Christmas time, Merry Christmas!

What to pay: Cheap market prices ...

H O N E Y: Honey Bees

If you do like honey there is a wonderful small place where you can buy one of the finest and utmost fresh honey.

Pay a visit to the Japanese Garden of Clingendael and just walk into the garden via the head promenade. At the left side you will find a small house with a very friendly beekeeper and his honey bees.

What to buy: He knows all about his honey bees and, you may ask any question. He just returned from Japan (in September 2007) where he joined a congress about ... bees and Japanese flowers!

You can buy some really delicious honey of different seasons (I do love the "Balsemien" honey of the autumns).

Oow, I have to mention he is there on Saturday and Sunday (day time), and when lucky you may find him some other mornings ...

What to pay: ... honey for about 3.50 Euro per pot !

Address: Wassenaarse Weg, Clingendael

Directions: Between The Hague and Wassenaar, direction Scheveningen (bus 18 & 23)

Bij De HEMA: A Lot To Buy At HEMA

ZA ZEN: Books & Spiritual Music

In the Zoutmanstreet, Zeeheldenkwartier - Sea-heroe-area, is the well-known Za Zen book-shop. Looking for international books, specially about "wisdom and spiritual matters", find this wonderful book-shop. The atmosphere is very peaceful, the people are friendly, and they offer a great assortment of different books of this kind ... already for about 17 years.

What to buy: Besides books you can get CD's, specially with peaceful, spiritual-minded music. There is a small gift-shop, too. Looking for incense from India or Japan, essence-oil, symbolic gifts like stones, ornaments, Tarot, I Ching etc. this is the place to be. Even Tibetan Tangka and meditation pillows can be bought. I really always feel very welcome in this shop ...

Open:
Monday 13.00 - 18.00 hrs
Tuesday 10.00 - 18.00 hrs
Wednesday 10.00 - 18.00 hrs
Thursday 10.00 - 18.00 hrs
Friday 10.00 - 18.00 hrs
Saturday 10.00 - 17.00 hrs

What to pay: Depends, ... not really cheap! Books are about 10 Euro until 100 Euro, gifts are about 3 Euro until very expensive (like some Tangka's), CD's are like elsewhere (some with discount of 10 Euro)

PRINSESTRAAT - The Hague: Smallest Shopping-street

See here the Prinsestraat, one of the oldest, and smallest shopping-streets of The Hague. Usually the Prinsestraat is connected with the way to visit the Palace and its Royal Garden and Stables (Prinsessewal). This street has been named after Prince William II, constructed around 1610.

My point of view is the Kantoorvakhandel Berlage (Prinsestraat 1-3), a beautiful Berlage building from 1895, where you may enter the Prinsestraat. From there have a look back and enjoy the great view at St. Jacobs Church (Grote Kerk). And see the splendid statues of females at the front of the building!

St. Jacobs Church
Royal Stables
Female Statue - Public Women

What to buy: You'll find a great variety of restaurants and cafes. The best known establishment is Cremers Coffeeshop (Prinsestraat 84) and, Brasserie Surakarta (Prinsestraat 13) is well-known for its Indonesian delicious food (see link). At the theatre, named KORZO, you may watch Dutch and cultural, international plays (Prinsestraat 42).

Find the Dischi Records (low recordshops, Prinsestraat 43) and, Gabriell Clothing (Prinsestraat 73A) with tip-top self-made clothes. At Gabriell Clothing and HYPE (Prinsestraat 4) you can get the hottest party-times tickets. PUCK food and wines (Prinsestraat 33) got known for its "non-smoking sections", so this place is a real gift for non-smokers. Some galleries, a great flower-shop and shops with little nick-nacks you can find, too ...

What to pay: You can find some cheap things, you can find some very expensive ...

Piet Heinstraat Shops: Square PIET HEIN

To me the small Piet Heinstraat/street, starting from beautiful Piet Heinplein (see pic) is one of the cosiest shopping areas outside the centre of The Hague. This is the so named "Zeeheldenkwartier", street area of the Dutch sea-hero's like Piet Hein, just in opposite of the Royal Gardens and -Stables (see link). There are some very nice shoppings and Art Nouveau is found here, some great antique shops, friendly coffee-shops and some New-Age shops ...

What to buy: Take a look at “Supermarkt Moskou”, it's the first Russian shop in The Hague which is specialized in genuine Russian food and drinks, books and videos,Babushkas and several other things ...

What to pay: Piet Hein-street prices aren't that odd! Some sharp priced articles like antiques ...

Address: Supermarkt Moskou, Piet Heinstraat 66

Directions: Zeeheldenkwartier, area of Dutch sea-hero's, Piet Heinplein
