The famous Gemeentemuseum (yes, is just one word, translated "museum of municipal") was built in 1935 by H.P. Berlage. The museum houses modern works, expressionists and many paintings by MONDRIAAN. See The Hague silver and porcelain (open Tuesday till Sunday from 11.00 - 17.00 hrs), and go for a walk in the attractive gardens near the lake ...
When passing the Gemeentemuseum walking down the Stadhouderslaan you'll see the famous negro-like woman-photograph. Come closer and, you'll notice the white model covered with coffee beans. The photograph (named "Coffee") has been shot by Dutch well-known fashion photographer Marcel Van De Vlugt for his item "I Like", for now to be seen at the Gemeentemuseum.

When showbusiness, congresses and other conferences the NCC is the best and largest location to find. Just between the centre of The Hague and beach resort Scheveningen both city visitors and beach lovers can enjoy all the facilities the NCC offers ... ehm, the building was created by J.P. Oud in 1960, and will have an extreme "make-up over" in 2006 with its new name of "World Forum Convention Center"!
Address: Churchillplein 10, The Hague

A Hooray for Scheveningen Harbour, too! Scheveningen celebrated its 100st birthday (since November 26, 1904). Scheveningen (the north-west part of The Hague) was proud, The Hague was proud ... with all kind of events.
Visiting Scheveningen Harbour is more than pleasant. Go to Heaven 2 and see the Marina and its yachts, walk around and see the Museum Ship, located on the war-ship A-856, an ex-mine-sweeper built in 1952 (at right on the pic).
As well in summer- as in winter-time people love to visit this spot, also for a delicious sea-food snack you can get around. Try to get in touch with an original "Scheveninger", the locals who are very proud of their fishing-village. They love to tell about their legends ...

When you visit Scheveningen and do at the same time a walk along the Northsea beach, see the Oude Kerk (Old Church) where used to be an old fisher-village. It had 900 inhabitants in 1840. Historic parts of what originally was a fishing village can be seen at the Old Church, an edifice built in the 14th century.
It has been proved the Old Church must be older as the Old Scheveningen Port. In 1357 there has been some talk of "Capelaria Sceveninghe", which official name was St. Antonius Abt (Abbot of St. Antoinius). After Reformation (16th. century) it was named Dutch Reformed Church, and became the Old Church after the construction of the New Church in 1893.
The Old Church still stands at the end of Keizerstraat, a sentinel of centuries, just behind the dunes. Its interior is simple, beautiful and inviting ....

Directions: End of Keizerstraat
Another lovely church of Scheveningen is the O.L. Vrouwe van Lourdes Kerk (by A.J. Kropholler & C.M. van Moorsel, 1913-1926), as well the Lourdes Church. There is a little chapel aside where day-light is coming in, right onto a white statue of the Virgin-mother Maria. It is covered by a wooden construction.
The Lourdes Church got a way of the deforestation and demolition of the sixties. It did not get razed to the ground when the plans about the Casino, Mega Cinema and others got introduced (the locals forced them). And it has been totally renovated in 2000 by the Government (who named its property "Pearl Of Scheveningen"). I do love this spot for very special reasons ... Step into an oasis of peace, spirituality and beauty ...
Address: Lourdes Church, 2e Messtraat, Scheveningen
Directions: Next to Circus-Theatre (tramline 1 from Central Station or Hollands Spoor)

See the South side of Groenmarkt (Green-market) where the Old City Hall (Oude Stadhuis) shines in all her old Dutch Renaissance style. It contains the entrance to the office suites and the large basement restaurant, too.
This is the old quarter of The Hague, where it fronts onto the main shopping Vene street, the chique Bonneterie (a department store, well-known for its international and royal clients) and, the famous terrace of 't Gouden Hooft Restaurant (Golden Head Restaurant). This triangle formed place still is the heart of city's center of The Hague. And have to mention the 2 beautiful ladies (true Goddesses!) on the front having a chat ...
Address: Groenmarkt, The Hague
Directions: Old center of The Hague, close to Post-office and next to St. Jacobs Church
The roofed-over Passage off Buitenhof is a long established shopping arcade and well worth a visit. Once the upmost trendy place to shop this oldest shopping arcade of The Hague dates from 1982 and, it contains modern shops and restaurants.
When visiting The Passage shopping arcade see the beautiful "public women" statues of "Agriculture", left side, and "Industry", right side. That has been told, while at the other side of The Passage you'll find "Traffic" (left side, male) and "Technics" (right side, female), created around 1928 (find these when entering from Hofweg).
The sculptor is unknown of all sculptures and, these 2 statues you can find over the entrance of Passage when walking from Gravenstraat, crossing with Kettingstraat.
Address: Gravenstraat, The Hague
Directions: Off Buitenhof and, just in front of the Dutch Parliament buildings, corner of Gravenstraat and Kettingstraat
Visiting The Hague you should see the Haagsche Bluf (The Hague Boast!). It is a little brand-new shopping square in the center of the old The Hague shopping area. Even the trees and the benches to rest have been just placed in December 2001 to enjoy the new square, though the original base (18th century) has been kept. Like the Jugendstil style cafe, the French 18th century fountains and tower of Tuscan style. Have a cup of coffee at the Hague-Lounge and act distinguished... some say it is too much, heehee
Address: Haagsche Bluf, The Hague - Holland
