This is the King of Rivers which you can sail by the Chao Phraya River Ferry. The boat trip is really a worthwhile, which we did coming from Khao San Road going to the Oriental. At each pier, the boat hands plead to the crowd to keep a "cool heart" and allow the gap between dock and boat to subside before disembarking or boarding! Get aboard as quick as possible!
And ... a charming lady all in hippie style, dared to ask 400 THB per person when we wanted to enter the pier. An unsuspecting tourist would have payed her.
It is good to know the boat trip only cost 10 THB, just like by a river-bus. You pay and get your ticket within the boat. You'll love it, the cool breeze, watching some famous spots (we saw the Grand Palace and the Temple of Dawn), some Thai kids splashin' around ...

Off The Beaten Path: SUPER RICH 2x

Maybe a bit confusing, but want to change your money with SUPER RICH you need to know next. There are 2 places with exact the same name in the same street, just opposite of eachother where to change your money. So both are named SUPER RICH. Actually you never can tell who has the best rate! Don't ask why ...
So when visiting this spot at the Rajadamri Road and you wanna use every Baht check both of the SUPER RICH shops. One is exact on the corner, the other is opposite of it and 2nd. shop!

Lumpini Park: LUMPHINI PARK

When we arrived at Bangkok (our last visit July 2006) my brother handed us over a paper where he had written down the Thai name of LUMPHINI - SATHOR. Our hotel was located in that area, and we had to speak the LUMPHINI in a special pronunciation, that is not in an English or Dutch way. We got to our hotel right away ...
Did you know that the LUMPHINI PARK has been named after the Buddha's place of birth in Nepal? I didn't, and didnot know there was the station of Subway Lumphini. So we explored the LUMPHINI PARK. There are shady paths, a large artificial lake, and when walking through this park very early in the morning you'll see a lot of Chinese practising T'ai Chi. Not interested, then you may watch the miniature muscle beach on weekends where is a weight-lifting area like in Los Angelos, Venice Beach. Enjoy the early in the morning vendors who sell a lot of funny freaky curiosities like fesh snake blood ... or the night hawkers with a lot of good food dishes!

Off The Beaten Path: BANGKOK - City Of Angels

You've read the real tongue-twister that is the official name of Bangkok. What got shortened to Krung Thep or City of Angels. The breathtaking 43 syllabes translates roughly as following:
Great City of Angels, Repository of Divine Gems, Great Land Unconquerable, Grand and Prominent Realm, Royal and Delightful Capital City Full of Nine Noble Gems, Highest Royal Dwelling and Grand Palace, Divine Shelter and Living Place of Reincarnated Spirits
Well, isn't that a bombastic title for a city? No city in the world come even close to it! People tell that the original royal city was founded on a little village named Bang Makok, or Place of Olive Plums, and stubborn foreign traders kept saying BANGKOK, never bothering to adjust their appellation ...

Backstreets: Dirty Soi Street!

Heeheeh,... nope, not a street full of sexual challenge, but hold your breathe! Here the entrails are prepaired for food. Bowels, intestines, tripe, just name it and you can find it here! Indeed this little Soi 1 belongs to the most dirty street of Bangkok, according to many tourists. Because the smell here surpasses the pollution of Bangkok. Yep, Soi 1 right between Siam Center & Mah Boon Karong.
We had to go here for the delicious PLA DUK, the favourite fish-food of my brother. He warned us for the rats and the cockroaches that could show up. They didn't, but take care for the grating in the middle of the pedestrian path. These can dart away under your feet. Not that nice having a dashing, thudding free fall right between the entrails...
