  • The phenomenon of the coloured lakes of Gunung Kelimutu has challenged scientists for years and it is still not known exactly what elements cause the vivid colours, nor how they change ...

The red lake, called "Ti Wu Ata Polo", has turned into dark-green, and represented blood, believed by the locals. The adjacent green lake, called "Ti Wu Nua Fooh Fai", means "Lake Of Youth", the vivid reflections of trees and sky evoke life, plants and youth. The third lake is set apart from the other 2 and has the largest surface area. This lake has been changing colour only very slowly from blue to black and has the sinister reputation as a suicide spot. Originally blue in colour, this lake is called "Ti Wu Ata Mbupu" or "The Lake For The Old", since the people believe that blue suits the old, like in the weavings and clothes they wear. See those three coloured lakes of the Kelimutu Mountain for yourself ... breathtaking!

  • The Komodo monitor genus has a considerable, evolutionary history. In the prehistoric past, the creature pobably lived throughout the entire region from Australia, Timor, Sumba, Flores and other Indonesian islands. A truly spectecular creature... it can run swiftly, jump, walk on 2 feet, is a splendid climber, swimmer, diver, and digger. It can move like a weasel, eat like a crocodile, stuff food into its mouth like a pelican, and its forked tongue is like a snakes !

So take care watching Tuan Awas (as the Komodo is named Mr. Be Carefull) ... thanks for visiting.

  • Once that important port, and the domain of a true raja/king, it is said Ende-today is a miserable place. Well, that's not all true, the people are so friendly, the food is good, and getting a bemo is easy peanuts.

Visit the house where late President Sukarno lived when he was exiled to Flores by the Dutch in 1933. This house is on Jalan K.H. Dewantara, and it's a national shrine now, a well-cared for, cream building with red sign outside.

Visit the Pelabuhan Ipi at Ende, and catch a glimpse of boatbuilding techniques. Bugis immigrants built the remarkable stemless boats, used all over Flores (named Pinisi). These boats have 12 ribs, just like the human body, and are usually constructed from the base of a dugout canoe ... many use the old Dutch spritsail rig. Sounds funny huh ?

And when really tired of all... jump to Labuhan Bajo for a visit! Head for the airport,... or get you a bemo.

  • Tourist from the Rich West love the beach, wherever on the world that may be. You should know local people in these islands do live right next to the beach. Besides the Indian Ocean is a dangerous one the locals do not want to sit in the sun and do prefer to go for a pick-nick in the shadow of a tree ...

So when you want to go to the beach you better do not visit the Ende-beach, named Pantai Ipi. Get a bemo and let you drop near Pantai Nanganesa. Maybe it is not that easy to find, so just ask people around ... you have to climb the hill.

Enjoy the absolutely astonishing, pitch-black sandy beach of Pantai Naganesa and feel the strong vibration of the wild, smashin' waves of the Indian Ocean. Take care of he waves. There is a very strong undercurrent,... very very dangerous!

Nice colored lakes. Remind me of the ones in Bandai highland in Japan. Great page of another less travelled place.

I agree Jadedmuse,... Just the black was stunning, the waves dangerous, and the beach filled with insects. That's why we decided to lay on the rocks, where we could wet our bodies anytime, without pulled into the water ... tnx for comment
