PULAU SABOLO KECIL

Flores is the most beautiful island of Nusa-tenggara (Lesser Sunda Islands). Unfortunately an experience of an earthquake destroyed some of the beautiful coral reefs around in 1992. Still it is good diving and snorkeling off the beautiful beach at Pulau Sabolo Kecil (small Sabolo Islet, there is a Pulau Sabolo Besar/Big, too).

Just an hour away from Labuhanbajo you can enjoy this small ocean-islet, where it's possible to meet reef-sharks, turtles, and more marine sea-life creatures ... Watch the strong under-current, and the sunbeams, no accomondation on this islet, so the only shadow you can find, is the boat! Bring food supply and water!

LABUHANBAJO MARKET Place

Wednesday and Saturday there is a colorful pasar/market place in Labuhanbajo. Although about 3 km outside the village, along the main road, a new bigger market can be found (I heard). The downtown market is an experience because of the local sociability, the pleasant whispering and laughing and, the serious interest for you (well, when trying to make a chat ...). See the women selling fruit and vegetables sitting in the sunshine squatting for hours and hours ...

PULAU BIDADARI

Wanna spend some time in a submarine paradise? Then charter a small catamaran and sail to the Pulau Bidadari/Bidadara (about 3 hours). The clearest and closest snorkeling is found off the white sand beaches here. Good opportunity to swim and even for a dive!

The reef of the coast has a big diversity of inhabitants, among them big tropical fishes. There is nothing else on this beautiful island, so bring water, titbits and refreshments and, sending you a great greeting from this paradise!

WAICICU BEACH

Go for a short boat-ride to the Waicicu Beach, North of Labuhanbajo. It is well-known for a swim to the tiny island of Kukusan Kecil just offshore and Kukusan Besar (Big Kukusan) further out.

Snorkeling is here not a good idea because of the use of reef-dynamite. You can go for great fishing trips, get info at the Waicicu Beach with Pak Nasar or his family. Sunsets are spectacular, and a climb on the hill is great for its views. Also the area could be suffering from malaria, so better get some info before staying at the bungalows there (which includes 3 meals!).

Pulau Komodo

When Labuhanbajo as jumping-off point for the Komodo Island, you are at the right spot! Go for Loho Liang Bay, Pulau Komodo. Explore this small, semi-circular bay, a pristine area of white sulfur-crested cockatoos, mound-building jungle flows, bush turkeys, willi willi birds, bellowing deers, and snorting boars crashing through the grass.

A beautifully dormant, conical volcano (730 m.) surging right out of the ocean. Many natives never climb it for fear possessed by evil spirits and the NAGA, a mythic creature out of ancient times! BTW,... it is said that the wild buffalo found on Komodo are descended from Arab's cattle ...

May is the best to visit Komodo Island. Grass is green, and temperatures agreeable. Be present when neighbouring with Komodo Island, don't miss this opportunity ...
