Name of Shop: Jalan Somba Opu
Go to shop in the Jalan Sombu Opu! All down this street, located at South of Fort Rotterdam and one block East of the waterfront, are jewelry shops, woodcarvings, plaited work, seashells, Makassarese brassworks, Torajan crafts, mother-of-pearl broaches, Torajan and Bugis sarungs, clove artifacts, postcards etc.
What To Buy: The superb craftsmanship and reasonable prices of the glittering gold jewellery make it a heaven for people from all over Indonesia. I loved the Bugis silk and sarungs, and the Toraja kopi (coffee) ... and guess what I took home? The "minyak gosok", a kind of rubdown oil. The Makassarese women make the best massage cremes (I think).
What To Pay: About 5$ for good sarungs, up to some 100$ for antique Chinese porcelain ... (postcard is very cheap,... some euro-cents)
