Yogyakarta, well-known as the "maindoor to traditional Javanese culture"
and, is with Solo/Surakarta the religion and spiritual centre of Java,
centre of art and academies.
A major batik-producing center, too,
so I always drag a lot of batiks with me leaving Yogya ...
Because Yogyakarta, Central Java, is an area surrounded by ancient ruins, it is named
the centre of Java's "Realm of the dead".
The famous Mataram Empire of Central Java was divided under Dutch pressure,
forming the states of Surakarta/Solo and Yogyakarta in 1755.
Yogya (pronounced "Joag-jah") is still governed by an ancient line of sultans and,
in fact, it's the only functioning sultanate left in Indonesia.
And famous for its most imposing creations of mankind >>>
