"Beesel" Beesel by vtveen

To be honest I hadn’t ever heard of Beesel before our visit. We were looking for accommodation in Swalmen, where we had a superb dinner a year ago. But ‘googling’ for Swalmen there were no hotel hits and for another nearby village Reuver there was one hit for ‘Herberg De Bongerd’ in Beesel.
It looked fine, was very affordable and it turned out to be a good choice.

Beesel is a typical rural village in the middle of Limburg, more or less between the cities of Roermond and Venlo. It has a central square with a couple of cafés/restaurant and hotel De Bongerd. The ‘St. Gertrudiskerk’ (1842) dominates the square and is worth a visit.

We were surprised by ‘Castle Nieuwenbroeck’, almost in the centre of town. Just outside the buildings stands windmill ‘De Grauwe Beer’ along the river Maas. Both sights are signposted as is the so called ‘Historische Groentenhof’, a garden with historical vegetables and fruit trees (http://www.vergeteneten.nl/).

Beesel can be reached along Highway 73, exit 18 Beesel/Reuver and follow the signs for Beesel.
