Drenthe - Borger: Hampshire Inn Bieze, surrounded by 'hunebedden'

Or as the locals say: Hotel Bieze. The hotel is located in the middle of the village of Borger in Drenthe. Around this village are a lot of cycling and walking routes. It is an ideal starting point for exploring the 'hunebedden' - the Dutch Dolmens. Hotel Bieze is just renovated and offers 22 hotel rooms, modern, comfortable and with all facilities you may expect from a *** star hotel. It offers a gourmet restaurant, but it is also possible to have lunch or dinner in 'the Grand Café' or on one of the terraces. Ask for the special packages. It is possible to rent a bike through the hotel and to get routes.
Unique Qualities: As (almost) everybody comes to Drenthe and Borger to walk or cycle it is a great idea to offer the guests a local weatherforecast while they have dinner. So it is possble to plan your next trip.

Groningen - Aduard: De Gastheerd, close to the city of Groningen

We made a reservation in a hotel in Aduard, but due to an overbooking we were transferred to ‘De Gastheerd’ (or Guesthouse), also in Aduard. Afterwards we were very happy with it, because the hotel didn’t have too much charm. Completely different from the B&B, which is situated in an old (19th century) gentleman’s farmhouse. It has 4 bedrooms, which share the spacious and modern bathroom (double wash basins, shower and bath), a breakfast room, which also can be used for reading a book or preparing the next day trip. It also offers a garden and a kind of orchard and it is possible to rent a bike to explore the surroundings of Aduard/Groningen. Three spacious rooms are € 68, per night; we had a smaller one and had to pay € 58,- There is also an self contained apartment in the ‘barn’ behind the main house. The B&B is for sale on the moment (June 2007), so if you want to stay here, you will have to hurry.
Unique Qualities: Very good breakfast and very nice hosts (JoAnn and Hans van Seventer). Excellent location to visit the city Groningen (we did it by bike, but you can also take your car or the bus) and the countryside around Aduard.

Limburg - Vijlen: A gen Kirk, with a 'holy breakfast'

Although not a real B&B, I think it is more a small guesthouse, it was a great experience staying a couple of nights in A gen Kirk. We found it on the internet and after reading a lot of very good (Dutch) reviews we made our reservation. Because it was almost a last minute booking we got a discount on the room price. The B&B is part of the ‘bike and ride café’ and that is exactly what people are doing in this part of the country. The four rooms are located in a separate building behind the café and a small patio. The rooms do have different themes like a ‘hunter room – with some not to well stuffed animals – a ‘royal room’, a Mary Servaas room’ with a lot of knick knacks and a ‘Marilyn Monroe room’. Due to a mistake with our reservation we did sleep in two different rooms – Hunter and Mary Servaas: one on the ground floor and the other night on a room on the first floor (accessible by rather steep stairs). Both were spacious; the one on the ground floor a little more, but the other one has an own little balcony with two chairs and a table. Rooms are basic, with a TV and fan, but are clean and could use a little bit more light in the evening, when one wants to read a book. The bathroom has a shower, toilet, soap and four towels. Beds were comfortable. From 8.30 am in the morning an excellent breakfast was waiting for us in the café. This is a very remarkable room with its more than 100 images of saints, bibles, holy crosses and other ‘holy stuff’. Your breakfast looks really like a 'holy breakfast'. (More info/pics about Vijlen)
Unique Qualities: Quietness of the location and its friendly and helpful owners.

Limburg - Vlodrop: Boshotel Vlodrop, in the middle of a national park

We stayed in this hotel for a weekend to explore the National Park "De Meinweg". The hotel is situated more or less in the middle of the park and is an ideal starting point for a bike tour or for walks in the park (see 'things to do tip') We did rent our bikes from the hotel. Ask for one of the many arrangements they offer. The mentioned price in this tip depends on the arrangement you get (we had a so called 'bikers welcome arrangement')
Unique Qualities: 'The hotel has every aminity for a pleasant stay. - nice ensuite rooms with TV, phone and minibar, - restaurant and a cosy lounge for a drink - health & wellness centre with swimming pool and sauna - fitness room

Noord-Brabant - Deurne: Willibrordhaeghe - staying in a former monastery
|

The hotel is situated in a former monastery, which was rebuilt on this place after the devastation of another mission house during World War II. Willibrordhaeghe was officially the St. Willibrord mission house, the former seminary of the SVD priests, who are also known as the Missionaries of Steyl. Numbers of trainees for the priesthood declined more and more and the building became much too large for that purpose. After a restoration Willibrordhaeghe was reopened in 2004 and nowadays is a modern four star hotel, which still offers extensive conference facilities. During our stay we met different kind of people in the hotel: businessmen on a conference, a group of students on a summer course, wedding parties and ‘normal’ tourists like us. The interior of the building is a mixture of modern decoration with some historical elements, but we always were impressed by the serenity and special atmosphere. Our room was very spacious with all modern amenities, but without a balcony (ever seen a monastery with balconies ?). It is possible to rent a bicycle at the hotel to discover to area around Deurne. The hotel has a large courtyard, a nice lounge, bar, restaurant (with a terrace) and a fitness room. Breakfast was really perfect. The staff - everybody, everywhere and always - was very helpful and friendly. The buildings are surrounded by a landscape park.
Unique Qualities: When we made our reservation, the receptionist referred to a booking site (www.hotelspecials.nl) because it offered a cheaper rate. Finally we decided for one of the deals from the hotel.

Noord Holland - Texel (Den Burg): De Lindeboom, old charm and hospitality

Hotel De Lindeboom (The Lime Tree) is located in Den Burg and situated on the Groeneplaats, the square just in the centre of this ‘capital’ of Texel. Therefore a perfect place if you are not on Texel for the beach and the sea and during off season periods. The hotel has a car park (€ 6,- a day) and it also possible to rent bikes at the front desk. De Lindeboom does exist from 1895 and even now it has in my opinion a lot of ‘old charm and hospitality’. Rooms are renovated and do have all modern amenities one can imagine (bathroom, air-conditioning, floor heating, internet access, colour TV and really nice beds). It has a couple of restaurants; we did like most the so called Café Brasserie with a warm interior (a little bit like an English pub), serving tasteful diners. The oldest part of De Lindeboom is Het Schoutenhuys, which dates back to 1611) and is a well known restaurant on Texel (we missed it because it was open from Wednesday till Sunday). The excellent breakfast buffet was a great start of the day. De Lindeboom has a nice sunny terrace and even early February we could drink our cappucino enjoying the sun and watching Texel's streetlife.
Unique Qualities: The charm and hospitality of a family owned hotel. Perfectly located in the middle of the nice village of Den Burg. It offered very interesting special deals.
