Alaska, what a vast land

by hobie97224 - last update: Nov 18, 2006

Not much to see

How far North can you go

We went to Alaska as part of a work assignment and spent 3 days working in Anchorage, then flew over to Bethel. Bethel is an interesting place with a total of 8 miles of paved roads around the village. There is no Alcohol sold in the village, but it is not illegal to have it. Had a bottle of wine with the excellent salmon dinner we were served.
Welcome to Nome

Nome

Nome was the next stop on or travel schedule, we now we have 25 miles or paved highway (mostly gravel) and lots of alcohol available in Nome. This is the end of the Iditarod dog sled race but it was the wrong time of year to see that. I found it interesting that there is a large population of gold miners that mine off the beach. They are a 2 man operation and one dive down and sift the sand up with a vacuum to be filtered on a platform in a barge. I found this very interesting.
right by the taxi way at the local air strip

The North Slope

From there went back to Anchorage to connect with my flight to Kapark, this is a oil company settlement on the north slope. I don’t think there is any place further north than this in the USA. There was lots of wild life, and an interesting place to see. In the first part of August the ice was already starting to come in on the north shore so it would not be long until it truly is winter up there
