Name of Shop: various gift shops
Vienna is famous for its chocolates and i bought a LOT of them (so many calories - but I have a sweet tooth). The biggest punishment for me would be to cut down on my sugar (can live without nicotine but not glucose) and this trip took care of my one year's need of fructose. You can find all types of chocolates and nougurts and they are so finely packed and displayed that it is irresistable (CF: the night club was next to a chocolate shop - you can very well guess where I would spend more time)
What To Buy: chocolates, nougurts, sweets, caviar,
What To Pay: usually they are expensive - better to buy in a super market than the souvenir or chocolate shops

Name of Shop: Swarovski
Swarovski is a crystal brand famous world over and it is Austrian, but I found the cystal in Vienna much more expensive than other parts of the world. Swarovski has jewelary, decoration, desk items, frames, and even watches made from glass and crystal. Very tempting to go into the shop and even more tempting to buy something
What To Buy: They often have items on sale - the original prices are exhorbitant
What To Pay: you pay through your teeth

There are many souvenir shops all over Vienna - especially at the tourist places. My advice is to first go around and see all the shops (usually they have the same variety) but the prices may differ - and then to go to one shop and buy everything from there. If you buy more than 75 euros from a single shop then you can claim back the 20% GST when you are going back.
What To Buy: Stephanplatz memorabalia, T-shirts, stuffed toys, caps, hats, glass ware.

Souvenir shops: Cheaper crystal

Name of Shop: Souvenir shops
crystal is my passion - but Swarovski is so expensive - so just cross the road and look in the window of an ordinary souvenir shop and you can find the same swarovski crystal at half the price - but there is a catch. The crystals in this shop are either the old models, or the ones with slight defects - though sometimes not noticeable.
What To Buy: Buy a bigger piece cos then you save more - but be very cautious and throughly examine it before paying up.

With the advent of clay figurines and ceramics a whole new category of art pieces are available and shops are so full of them - cute little figurines to abstract works - and Vienna has it all. Again these are very expensive at times.
What To Buy: cute little figurines of kids
What To Pay: they start at 200 euros

The chocolates in Vienna are just irresistable. You cannot avoid buying tons of them if you enter a confectionary. They have so much variety and shapes. You can select and choose as well.
What To Buy: Marzipan animals
What To Pay: a bit expensive - one piece range from 0.50 to 10 euros
