Singapore Zoological Gardens & Night Safari: animals prowling in the night
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you visit Singapore and have not seen Night Safari then you have seen nothing. It is one of the unique things you can do. Take a cab or a bus to mandai zoo and get the tickets. It is a bit expensive but worth every dime. A small train would take you around the zoo with some nice running commentary about the animals. The lighting is superb and feels more like a moonlit night than artificial light. There is no feeling of cages and the animals appear so free to roam around. You can walk also which is a better way to see the animals.

Sentosa Island: The island of adventure
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sentosa is a small island just off the coast of Singapore. You can drive up there. It has many fun things and museums - the best is the museum of Singapore's history and they show the wax statues of the Japanese surrender

    Kusu Island: The turtle island
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kusu is about 5.6 km out in the sea off Singapore island. They have a regular ferry service which can take you there. The island has a chinese monastry, some pythons and a large collection of turtles. It has nice beaches to have a swim and some parks to sit and relax.

  • Singapore has a sprawling downtown and business district with some high buildings. It is best seen from a distance where you can see the backdrop. Best place for this view is the Benjamin Sheers Bridge - but as it is difficult to approach, Esplanade is also a good place for the view

  • The gateway to SIngapore, the first impression, the convinience and warmth of Singapore - all of it is reflected in the Changi airport. It is a city within the city and is self contained. Due to high volume of transit passengers Changi airport has been made not only comfortable but also enjoyable. There are nooks and corners in the airport which make you feel that you are out in the nature rather than a closed space.

Sri Mariamman Temple: A beautiful temple

  • Sri Mariamman Temple is the oldest of Singapore's Hindu religious buildings. It is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman who is known for her power in curing epidemic illness and diseases. It is located in the heart of Chinatown. It was founded by a Penangian - Naraina Pillai - in 1819. It is a nice place to visit - even if you are not a follower of the Hindu faith.

Things To Do: The BIG splash
  • Tip Rating:
  • Singapore - The not-so-big splash

  • In our younger days we saw a Pakistani movie that was shot in Singapore. It showed a fight sequence and a song / dance (what do you expect from a Pakistani / Hindi movie) at the towering slides of the big splash. Since then I associated Singapore with the big splash and dreamt of singing a song (without a heroine) on these slides :) .. well now it is a neglected corner of east coast park. The water is dirty, the slides are not well maintained and very few people dare to go there. Better to avoid it - unless you have seen the same movie.
