Ugly or interesting, depends of your point of view Rotterdam is weird. That said, you can understand why it makes it an attractive city. It is definitely not an attractive city in traditional terms. The city is quite ugly, blown off by massive WWII destructions. But these destructions have been the "opportunity" to build something interesting.
Because it has been destroyed nearly entirely, the city is now the root to major architecural innovations. Some of the best architects come to Rotterdam (sometimes with big money incentives) to make some good innovations. Renzo Piano, Norman Foster among others.
Rotterdam is thus a city with some major architecural monuments (Kijk Kubus, Kop van Zuid...) and a strange atmosphere.
Anyway, for anyone interested in seeing some different destination, Rotterdam is a good stop on your way to Amsterdam. And for those very interested in archecture it is a must see. |
