Noirmoutier is one of the biggest French island. Anyway, it is still quite small and you can do the tour of the island in a few hours by car.
Noirmoutier is at the shore of la Vendée departement and has a real soul.
50 years ago, when the bridge that now links it to the continent was a fantasy or a nightmare (depends on people), Noirmoutier used to be really wild. A land of sailors who lived in quite poor conditions.
Now, the island is quite touristic. It becomes more and more touristic but still is not literally full of tourists as can be some French balnear places.
The island is divided in many parts, each one having its own soul. The one I know best is l'Herbaudière and its probably one of the wildest.
Things to know about Noirmoutier: all the houses are painted white and blue. Its wild with its sand dune and its pine trees.
Its mostly a family kind of tourism. Not huge clubs nor bars. |
