Portland could have been named Boston. The founding fathers having a rivalry among those from Boston, Mass, and those from Portland, Maine flipped a coin to choose the name.
Portland has begun to bloom!! After decades of being known as the underbelly of the Northwest it has begun a lovely transformation into a nice, laid back place to live. Besides having nice suburbs, Portland is rapidly transforming an old warehouse district called The Pearl into residential lofts and apartments. Most notable is the the old Blitz-Weinhardt Brewery complex.
Porland also has one of the most scenic approaches to landing at the airport of any city. One glides down the Columbia Gorge with volcanoes: Mt. Adams on the Right and Mt. Hood on the left. And on take off you might pass over the remains of Mt. St. Helens. Remember her?
Portland is also known as the the City of Roses. It has an extensive rose garden in the west hills plus it hosts a Rose Festival in June with a parade whose floats rival that of Pasedena's New Years Parade.
