The margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach founded the city in 1715 along the star-shaped avenues emanating southwards from his palace seen in the picture. Much of the neoclassical architecture which gives the inner city its special charm was the work of the architect, Friedrich Weinbrenner, in the early and mid-19th century.
