St Peter's - San Pietro: At a certain time every sunny day . . .

  • No trip to Rome would be complete without a visit to St. Peter's Basilica. If you get there at the right time of day, these shafts of light remind you what it is all about.

Don't forget to see Michelangelo's Pieta on your right as you enter the church. I forgot and we had to go back a second day. It's too bad they have to keep it behind glass now, but it is still awe inspiring.

When you go, don't forget there is a dress code. Both men and women must have knees covered. Ladies may wear slacks. Thank goodness!

Things To Do: Take a Walk -- via Guilia

  • Via Guilia is one of the prettiest streets in Rome. We read about it on a walking tour guide and so made a point of finding it and walking the length. It is beautiful and very quiet. We saw mostly Romans walking home or shopping. It is an easy walk to most of central Rome (which is very compact and walkable). It is very convenient to Trastevere and St. Peter's.

Click on the photo for several more pictures of via Guilia.

    Address: via Guilia, central Rome
Directions: One block from the Tiber, walk from Pza. d'Oro all the way to the Tiber where via Guilia meets the river. It's not a long walk but beautiful.

I'll call you "Queen of the Travelogues" because they are so terrific. We, too, were able to see the Pope, but not so close up. Your watercolors are marvelous.
