If you want a good view . . .

We had time to kill between Tuscany and Maratea so we decided to visit the Amalfi Coast. We luckily chose a really nice hotel above Sorrento with terraces overlooking the hotel pool, the Bay of Naples, Sorrento and Mt. Vesuvius. Views don't get much better than that.

There was a terrace on the very top floor of our hotel with views even better than from the terrace with our room. Just gorgeous. There's Mt. Vesuvius again with its permanent cloud.

The 2008 Naples Garbage Strike is far-reaching

This was the year of the great Naples garbage strike. While we were in Sorrento, near Naples, someone in Naples in frustration was burning their garbage. It caught a nearby car on fire and then spread to several more cars and an apartment building resulting in quite a few people without homes that night. The strike was on tv every night the five weeks we were there.

What surprised us was that it spread far beyond Naples. I took this photo out of our car window on the S145 headed toward Positano. This was not an isolated incident. These piles, some much larger, were beside nearly every Dempsy Dumpster in southern Italy. It was not scenic! It was in its 53rd day at some point while we were there. I hope they have it settled because it's a nightmare for the people who live there.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Natural scenery is just spectacular
Cons:The hand of man sits heavy on the land.
In a nutshell:Sorrento and surrounding area are beautiful but once is enough.

There's nothing quite like those Sorrento views are there? We stayed at Hotel Aminta and they have a webcam that I love to check out from time to time. I want to try Don Pedros.
