Palace of the Popes

In Avignon do visit the Palace of the Popes. The building and the setting are magnificent. They have visiting art exhibits and some are much nicer than others, but the underlying building and the rather spare furnishings are definitely worth the visit.

When you're done, you'll exit through the gift shop onto the Place de l'Horloge with no signage. If you're hungry, turn left. If you want to visit the Rocher des Domes, turn right.

There are lots of restaurants nearby and the views from the Rocher are unbelieveable. You can't lose.

Place de l'Horloge

A carousel, street performers, lots of al fresco dining, activity galore. This is a fun place to spend a few hours.

You should also walk up the Rocher des Domes for the views and the delightful park surrounding the viewing platform. There are flowers, fountains, sculpture . . . and pedal chariots for small children. The kids (or you) can feed the ducks at the fountain too.

Avignon Market

If you end up in Avignon on a rainy day as we did once, you won't enjoy the Rocher des Domes nearly as much as this wonderful, warm indoor market. It's like a giant outdoor marketplace except it is inside so all those wonderful aromas greet you as you walk in the door. So many choices . . . It's an easy walk from the Place de l'Horloge.

No. We are heading to the Champagne area soon. I had already read those pages, so I looked for others that I hadn't. I love Frances little out of the way villages, just like you do. I wished we lived closer so we could go for weekend drives around the countryside.

Ah yes, that would be wonderful. It's a 9-hour flight for us and probably much longer for you.
