So many places are billed as the Venice of something or other. Colmar is no exception. It is more German than Italian in feeling but there are canals all through the town and there are gondola rides on offer and there are cafes lining the canals. It's a lovely experience . . . it's not Venice but it's very lovely.

We truly enjoyed Colmar. It is Germanic in architecture but very French in feeling. There is much to do besides take a ride on the canal. (The rides are not in gondolas either; they are in small motor boats.)

We love Burgundy and particularly the colorful patterned tile roofs so were delighted to discover them in Alsace too.

Keep looking up and you'll find them everywhere.

Colmar is just great for taking a walk. Of course you don't want to miss the Musee d'Unterlinden nor the church, but take time for a long stroll, perhaps a horse and carriage ride and even a gondola ride on the canals while you are there. It's fun to soak up the atmosphere.

The food is excellent too. It's very French but with a distinct German flair.
