Lading in Montego Bay

Coming into Donald Sanstar Intl. was a bit of an interesting procedure.
First, get off plane. Then, find bag in hall, where it had probably already been taken off the conveyor belt and placed in the loving care of a porter long before you even got there (Fee. ?6.00).
After haggling wiht the guy that you were perfectly able to take accross the hall to customs youself, you finally get your bags and head over to customs.

After you arrive at customs be prepared to open your bag.

Jamaicans believe in making money wherever they can, including customs. If you smoke only bring 200 cigs. each or prepare to pay the taxes, and they are HIGH!! We went through witout too much of a hitch except for the brief intteruption about the smokes. ( I brought 800, ooppps!)

After all of that, out into the terminal. When you step out you are greeted by someone from the taxi rank. "Hey, mon!! Where you heading? I have the taxi alreardy for you, take you there straight away. You, smoke?? You, need anything??, Charlie?? Huh?" .....Wow that was quick! Luckily the Resort we were sting in 'Breezes, Runaway Bay' had a lounge and transportation pick up in the teminal. "No need I said" and the fella was very disappointed in the fact that we wouldn't take his taxi.
Into the Lounge to wait for the resorts' tranportation... Quick enough we outside smoking a cig after a 12 hour flight, and when you get out of the door to the terminl the coolest thing takes place...

Right there at the exit door of the Airport stationed just outside of the doorway.

How did they know???

The run out to Runaway Bay

We arrived about a week addn a half after "Ivan the Terrible" as they called it there. (It also didn't help that we had just circled the airport for an hour and a half because of the worst thundsrorm since the hurricane had hit and was finishing up re-flooding the roads.)

We got in the mini-bus at 6:00pm Jamaican Time. The driver, a friendly bloke named Charlie, from Mo'bay as they call it there, first said we could smaoke and srink in his bus and that it was "No, Problem!" then asked us how the flight was and was really friendly and sincere when he asked if "we were set", Did we need anything? After politley saying no, the subject was dropped and never brought up again.

Coming onto the roads he said to us that the normally 1 hour trip would be about 2 becaus of the damage from the previous storms.

Although it was really bumpy, it was adequate, and I thought I had bad roads in Ireland??!!

Charlie began telling us the history of the isaland and named off landscapes and areas along the way, and even taught us a little Jamaican. I had only bought 1 beer at the stand outside the airport, however when charlie realised mine was empty, he reached into a cooler in the fromt seat and produced another Ice cold one.

After standing in a line of traffic litterally for an hour to go about 7 miles we broke free and finally proceeded on our way. Charlie was a great driver and named the towns along the way aong with a brief history lesson in each. He kept the beer comin as well. Nice Guy!!! We arrived in Runaway Bay, at about 8:45pm. Funny, didn't feel that long.
