A little poem about Spanish life...

Fiesta
a time to celebrate
though we don't really need a reason
we celebrate the virgin
we celebrate the date
we celebrate religion
and we stay up very late

Siesta
the day is much too hot to work
we must rest and find some shade
"cerrado" you'll find in many a window pane
our afternoon rest lets us spend the night
looking our very best

Tapas
a little bite here, a little bite there
something to wash down with vino or cerveza
it could be lunch, but it's more like our dinner
a light snack of protein or cheese
sometime before the midnight hour

Paella
found closer to the coast
made for more than one
and enjoyed by most
prawns, mussels, and lobster too
all over a bed of saffron rice for a few

Cerveza
not soda, is the drink of choice
but we're not picky just bring the local brew
morning, lunch, dinner, or even on the run
we're not worried about diving
because we walk or take the bus

Sangria
but not for one
be careful of what you order
or a liter you'll receive
of a sweet and tasty sentiment
to cool the afternoon heat

Aqua el grifo
where the water is safe to drink
otherwise agua will only ring up your bill
with a bottle of water made for two

La cuenta, por favor
because we'll not bother you
until you say you're done
please do not tip us
our work is not based on your gratitude
nor your expectation of us

Playa
a sandy spot along the water
meant for splashing in with your daughter
bring an umbrella to provide you with shade
some sunglasses and a towel
until the afternoon fades
please do not mind a few bare breasts
we are accepting of all bodies
this is not a supermodel contest

Plazas
a fountain here
a statue there
idyllic symbols of rulers and men
street signs will not help you find
your way around a busy town
look to the plazas and take note
to help you find your proper route

Flamenco
tradition not lost
but found in a nice tourist spot
Gypsy claps and stomps
Bellydancing hips and arms
Melismatic singing
and dances with ancient charm

Toros
Sundays and Fiestas will bring the bulls to town
chasing men in white and red gown
the young say it's cruel
the old say it's tradition
you can decide for yourself
after you've paid the admission
pick a shady spot
and bring a hand held fan
there's no air conditioning in this ring
just the fighters, the bulls, and the stands

If my rhymes make no reason
and my poem you do not like
visit Spain for yourself
and see what life is really like
