Harvester Island Travel Guide: 8 reviews and 2 photos

Inhabitants

The population of Harvester Island consists of a family of setnetters. Though the fishing season only lasts five months, they frequently visit throughout the year to check on the status of their house. It is a lovely place with little tolerance for weakness or stupidity. Shortime travelers could never understand the draw of this place, but those who are willing to stay are welcome. (not at Harvester, but in the general Kodiak Island area)

Weather

Rain is the most common forecast. When the sun does come, it is cherished. The temperature never gets above 80, but during the summer doesn't normally go below 40. Variable winds are common.

Conclusions

Though the island is small, it is lovely. It is unalterably connected with salmon fishing, and that is the sole purpose of it's existance. If you want to learn more about the amazing experiance of coming up to Harvester from the Lower 48 in order to fish in the stormy waters of Alaska, the book, "Surviving the Island of Grace" by Leslie Leyland Fields is an excfellent resource.
