I went into Iraqi Kurdistan to visit a good friend who had been working there for the previous eight months or so. Without someone who knows what sort of red tape has to be cut to see anything beyond where you're staying, I doubt it is possible to see much.

The security situation in the north was good, but because of the omnipresent threat, moving about freely isn't really possible. Generally speaking it seemed safe but one still can't help be aware of the constant attention that must be paid to ensuring the north doesn't descend into violence.
