Welcome!

The Tomb of Ali in Mazar-e Sharif
Hello, and welcome to this site, one that is still quite a work in progress.
I signed up to VT while away on my last trip in the summer of 2004 and found the tips here quite helpful on the second part of that trip. I hope what I add here can be of help to others.
On the Nile, Cairo
I've had the good fortune in the past few years of being able to get away for a few months at a time. Of course I can remember the most recent trips best and hope that by keeping this page updated it will help me to keep a record for myself while also being able to share it.
Street scene, Suleimaniya.
On my most recent trip, in the summer of 2004 flew into Turkey before visiting a friend in Iraqi Kurdistan. After returning to Turkey moved into Iran and then into Afghanistan. From there I went north and went through Tajikistan on a short transit visa and then got into Uzbekistan -- a country I had long wanted to visit. I spent two days in the strangeness of Turkmenistan before flying back home.

In late March to early April I spent just over a week in Egypt, nowhere near enough time, but all I could stretch it to!
Diyarbakir, Turkey
In the summer of 2003 I started my trip in India before going to Pakistan and then up the Karokoram HIghway to Xinjiang, China. I then went on to Kyrgyzstan before going home from Kazakhstan.

In time I hope to draw from my notes and memory to get as much up here as possible. While Toronto remains home, I spend most of my time in Montreal And no, I don't have a maple leaf sewn onto my backpack!.
The palace of the Friendship of Peoples, Tashkent
Until I get my act together and put more up here, if you have any questions about the places marked in blue, send me a note!

Safe travels,
john
