Opava is the regional town situated at the confluence of the Silesian rivers Opava and Moravice, rising above the Silesian plain at the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains and is remarkable for its impressive architecture It is an important cultural centre for the region. There is the oldest museum in the Czech Republic.
The town is the birthplace and the final resting place of the poet Petr Bezruc, the founder of modern genetics J. G. Mendel studied at the local grammar school.
