Bora Bora - the Romantic island

by Muya - last update: May 20, 2008

Bora is a very small island, an enchantment to the eyes. Right from the plane, you will be immediately seduced by its turquoise necklace and the shape of its coasts. The charm of the South Seas operates rightaway !

Little haven of peace lost in the middle of the Pacific, Bora embodies better than Tahiti or even Moorea the myth of the Polynesian Vahine. But in fact “vahine” simply means “woman” and has nothing to do with the naiads you see on exotic calendars :-)

Lagoons, coral reef and white-coral sand beaches are its main assets, but Bora is also a very green island perfect for walks and small trekkings : Mount Otemanu towers at 727 m, and Mount Pahia at 626 m.

According to the legend, the island was the first to emerge from the water after Raiatea. Hence the name "Pora Pora" which means "first born". In ancient times, it was even called "Mai Te Pora", which means "Created by the Gods". Also known as the "Pearl of the Pacific", Bora owes part of its fame to artists, writers and navigators such as Alain Gerbault or Paul-Emile Victor who chose to live there for a while.
