In the ma’ohi language, "Mo’o" means "lizard", and "rea" means "yellow". Nothing to do with a lizard in fact, it was simply the name borne by the son of a great warrior chief.
Moorea is called the Sister Island of Tahiti. Only 10 km apart and yet so different… Viewed from above, Moorea has a funny shape, a bit like an animal footprint. This is actually due to one of the highest mount of the island, Mont Rotui (899m), which separates the northern coast into 2 beautiful bays : Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay. A lot of Tahitians choose escape the “bustling” life of the capital island for a day, a week-end or even come to live on Moorea, going back to Papeete by boat everyday to work. We too have fallen under Moorea’s spell… The island and its 133 km2 was the first haven of peace of our Honeymoon. We both will remember it as a fantastic place with breathtaking landscapes, not so much for its beaches than for the terrific views you get from the top of its 8 mounts. A colourful island with smells of vanilla, gardenia and pineapple. |
