Tahiti is the doorway to all other islands of French Polynesia. As the main island of the archipelago, it is home to the capital, Papeete. Spending a few days on Tahiti before starting a further exploration of the Pacific offers you a good transition between a hectic way of life and the totally relaxed attitude on the smaller islands.
Tahiti is a rather mountainous island, with great surfing spots in South. The island is actually divided in two : Tahiti Nui and the peninsula of Tahiti Iti (meaning respectively big and small Tahiti). The latter struck me with its green and totally wild landscapes. If you rent a car to tour the island it is well worth to push your visit that far... Tahiti Iti is quite unknown but is such a cute peninsula, with its neat little houses and gardens. At the border between Tahiti Iti and Tahiti Nui, you'll find the village of Taravao, with its numerous shops and eating places.
But to discover the real inlands, I would advise you to rather take part in specially organised day trips because you will not access everything by car. |
