The Pond du Gard is the most visited antique monument in France. It is the biggest roman aqueduct bridge in such a good state of preservation and it therefore belongs to UNESCOs World Heritage List. Its building started approximately 2000 years ago, in the middle of the first century after Christ, under the reign of emperor Claude, and ended presumably under Trojan (in the years 60). Around 15 years were necessary to complete this bridge. The Pont du Gard is the most extraordinary part of a giant aqueduct (the aqueduct of Nīmes) stretching over 50 km between Uzčs and Nīmes with the aim of bringing water to Nīmes. |
