This city is located in south-western Albania, on the coast of the Adriatic. Vlorė is not only a major port, the second of the country, but also is of great historical importance. It was here in 1912 that the Assembly was convened which first proclaimed Albania as an independent state and set up the first national government, headed by Ismail Qemali. Due of this, in 1962, Vlorė was proclaimed a Hero City. |
| The Monument of the Independence |
|  | In the centre of the city stands the monument of the independence, made of bronze, unveiled in 1972. On a high pillar of rock stands a figure of a standard bearer, while below are depicted distinguished figures of the movement of the independence of Albania. The main square in Vlorė is called Sheshi i Flamurit [Square of the Flag], in honour of the day of independence. |
