According to some autors, the city was named after an ancient city deity that the early Slavs called Laburus. Others maintain that the name derives from Latin and that the city was named after a flooding river "aluviana", or that the name derives from the word "Laubach", meaning "a swamp". Those who like the playwright and historian Anton Tomaž Linhart - are fond of the city believe that its name can only derive from the Slavic word "luba", meaning beloved. Sincerely I prefer the last theory. |
| | The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation A plan of the baroque Franciscan Church and of the statue of F. Preseren, the famous slovenian poet. The church was built by Augustinian monks between 1646 and 1660 and was reconstructed several times, and Its present image was gradually reshaped until the 18th century. Triple bridges are just in front of these monuments. |
The Dragon The symbol of the city. When the dragon lived in a big hole at the basement of the castle over Ljubljana, he demand from the people living in a small town under the castle, to bring him a young virgin girl once per month to eat her, or otherwise the dragon would burn the city. After a few years there were almost no young girls in the town. People living there, were desperately looking for help, so one day a young knight on a white horse came to town, and when the time came for the people to sacrifice another girl, the knight with the girl riding on a horse arrived in front of dragon's cave. After a fight betwen the dragon and the knight, the dragon's head was cut off. | | |
