Vila Franca do Campo is a town and a municipality in the southern part of São Miguel Island. The municipality has a population of 11,039 and a total area of 78.0 km². The town itself has 5,300 inhabitants and it was the first capital of the Island until 1522 when it was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake. Then, the capital of the Island was trasnfered to Ponta Delgada.
The municipality is linked, by a mountain road, to Ponta Delgada, Lagoa, Furnas, Povoação and the eastern and northern parts of the island. Most of the mountainous area of the municipality is forested with occasional grassy meadows. The rest of the land is devoted to agriculture with some small wooded areas interspersed. |
