Tiracol, a small island located in the northernmost part of Goa, is an estuary where the river meets the Arabian Sea offering some breath taking views. This place has a rich history which is reflected in the old buildings, heritage sites, forts etc. This island, known mainly for the Tiracol Fort, originally belonged to the rulers of the Bhonsale Dynasty.

Tiracol fort was built by the Marathas and it was captured by the Portuguese in 1776. Later, this fort was used by freedom fighters during the Goa freedom struggle in 1961. The fort houses a 100 year old chapel and it also houses an ancient church. Nowadays, Tiracol fort was converted to a Heritage Hotel.
