Amsterdam, part of Holland aka Netherland, means low-lying land where most of the country is actually under sea-level! Due to major floodings in the early times, the government went through many phases to curb the problems, the final one being the formation of the lake that goes by the name of Ijesselmeer. With this lake that took decades to form, many villages were destroyed but many others became famous! One of which is Voledam.

Famous as they may be for their tulips, the only time you get to see any fresh, live ones would be from late March to mid May. However, the floating flower market would do as well for a substitute should you miss the tulip season.

Another place not to be missed would be the Red Light District. Business runs all day round along the streets that line one of the many canals that you'll see in Amsterdam.
