  • Christmas time in Paris will definitely put you in the seasonal mood and with the people, lights and wine you'll ignore any cold temperatures and be glad that you decided to make a stop here.

Arc de Triomphe: One Of A Long List Of "Must See's"!

  • Although I have never tried, there is a way to get to the top, which would probably lend itself to some pretty good photo oppotunities.

It's also interesting to watch the traffic here. This is French driving at it's finest as incoming cars put the pedal to the metal as they approach and just hope that they win the game of "merging chicken". Quite the sight to behold.

  • For most people you probably won't be doing much shopping along the Champs Elysee, because you're really not going to be finding any bargains and most of the stores are 'high end'.

However, it's a street that's filled with hustle, people and a busy Parisian feel.

A suggestion would be to take the Metro to the Arc De Triomphe and then after you've seen that walk down the Champs Elysee.

Eiffel Tower: It's The Tall Pointy Thing Near The River.

  • What's a trip to Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower? I remember that I went up it once as a kid, but unfortunately on my last trip there was a worker's strike and so no-one was going up. Still you'll get good photos and if you head across the river to Les Invalides you find a really good spot for the "Here's me with the Eiffel Tower in the background" shot.

    Louvre: Priceless Artwork A-Plenty!

  • There's only one thing unfortunate about The Louvre, its sheer size. Not because of the distance to walk or anything like that, but more because you're unlikely to see everything that's great to see in there and so you end up virtually running past priceless pieces of artwork on your pre-planned quest to see the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo.

After that you run outside for yet another glass of wine at a corner cafe, feeling as though your "culture tanks" are now over-flowing.

This isn't of course what I did. I appreciated every single piece of artwork, while I mulled its implication to art around the world and the deep effect it would have on the rest of my life. Then I went out and had 25 glasses of wine.

Montmartre / Sacré Coeur: Get Your Walking Shoes Ready!
  • Tip Rating:

  • If memory serves me the Sacre Coeur is at one of the highest points in Paris. It is located in the district of Montmartre which is an old artist area of Paris.

Right behind the Sacre Coeur you'll find a web of small streets that lead to a cool square that I've forgotten the name of. Here there are plenty of places to eat, drink and enjoy the afternoon.

One tip: If you arrive in the area on the Metro and there's an elevator to the street level, take it. You may see a ton of people waiting for the elevator, but there's a reason. In this part of Paris you're way down beneath the ground. When we got there we thought "forget waiting, let's take the stairs". 3 days later we reached the street level.

  • There's not a lot to see here, but it's on your way to the Louvre and it great for a photo. Here you have the old French Royal Palace with it's historic courtyard that they one day decided to fill with black and white stripey columns.

The result is a cool looking mix of old and new.

  • Notre Dame is a must see Cathedral. Really there's not a lot to say except that it's really big, has really cool stained glass windows and shows you what people could build back in the day.

  • Somewhere on the front of Notre Dame Cathedral is one headless priest. I'm not sure what exactly was the story behind this guy, but I'll take a wild shot in the dark and assume that this guy had his head cut off one day.

Anyway, see if you can find him.

Paris? Soon? .....I made it through the wilderness and just posted the 'sneak peek' of the WILD Patagonian adventure. More to come. Far cry from climbing those tabletops in St. Barths!

For a wonderful view of Paris, walk to the top of Sacre Coeur. It is a winding trip to the top, but the view is worth any effort. P.S. Don't throw away your metro tickets until you are out of the destination station. Big fine.
