Canmore was established as a town in 1883 as a divisional point for the Railway due to its abundant supplies of coal to fuel the trains - A coal mining town up until 1979.
It is now firmly established as a tourist spot nestled in the Bow Valley at the foot of the Rockies.
Canmore is perfectly located an hours drive from Calgary & 15 minutes from Banff

Looks like an interesting place. We are looking for a town to visit around Calgary that has nearby farmlands. Not sure if Canmore does or not? Looks very pretty.

Sounds like a great place to stay while exploring Banff -- and it even has a Bicycle Cafe! Too bad about those huge trucks in a town that was originally a railway town. Do they still have train service?

Like you, I also miss the Rockies, having lived in Colorado. Canmore looks like a nice, quite town away from the tourist hordes at Banff.

Hans and I stayed in Canmore also. The rooms in Banff are much more expensive, that is if you can get a room. I often suggest for people to stay here as it's quite a nice town with lots of shops & restaurants.

I used Canmore as a bedroom while I was visiting Banff. What a shame I didn't see the city, I didn't know where to go. Nice page, nice place.

Fantastic scenery but how does it compare with Scotland's rugged and empty countryside?

Beautiful page and amazing pictures of the Three Sisters and outstanding scenery along Policeman's Creek. I didn't know about G8 Summit at Canmore.
