Sightseeing: Expect the Unexpected

  • Favorite Thing: London has some of the most famous landmarks in the world seen the world over through advertising - movies & television. When I watch the news from the BBC the images are instantly recognisable but look out for the less familiar sights & slightly off the beaten path. Walk around London away from the tourist lines and you may surprise yourself with what you can find.

Fondest Memory: Every time I visit London my favourite thing changes depending on where I go & what I do. I loved this building with its Curly Chimney Pots and quaint "Olde Worldy" architecture, it is the Liberty, a famous London store built in 1925 of mock tudor design. I loved seeing the shining ship perched high on the buildings roof (see second picture)

Sightseeing: The rich & famous looking down on you!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: As well as all the pomp & ceremonies of London look out for the fun side of life! It maybe just another pub - but would you expect to see this gentleman in any other city? I wonder what Shakespear would think of London today? A city far removed from its dirt & squaller but just as busy with people & traffic - both now of a different nature.

Fondest Memory: The people of London won't give you a second glance - far too busy - but if you start to laugh at things you see - BINGO - you have their attention - if only to see what could possibly amuse you!

General Tips: You will have to travel a long way
  • Tip Rating:
  • London - London Bridge - a bridge too far
  • London Bridge - a bridge too far

  • Favorite Thing: London's history is fascinating to read & to see - but you won't see much on London Bridge. As the old nursery rhyme goes - London Bridge is falling down my fair lady - & indeed it did fall down many times. The original stone bridge was built in 1176 & took 30 years to complete with the death of 150 workers. After numerous upgrades to strengthen the bridge it was finally sold. If you want to see the original London Bridge its location since 1972 is in Lake Havasu City Arizona USA

Fondest Memory: I love glass buildings they provide a great picture opportunity with their reflections. The picture is taken from London Bridge but the reflection is Cannon Street Station.

Architectural: Look out for the old & the new

  • Favorite Thing: Walking around London looking at the great icons like the Tower of London & Tower Bridge, keep your eyes peeled for the unusual. In the picture you will see Cannon Street Station, a very ordinary place at it's street entrance, but stunning with its old Victorian Towers viewed from London Bridge.

Fondest Memory: Strolling around less well known tourist routes, meandering along narrow streets spotting unfamiliar street signs with interesting names & being rewarded with interesting & historic things to see & do that are not particularly in the guide books. So best foot forward go explore you won't get lost but may find yourself lost in time.

After my first visit to London I really didn't care for the city. I've been back several times since & now it's one of my favorite cities. BTW, just got back from Honduras.

Great tips on local customs. Next time in London I must visit HMS Belfast.
