Local Customs: Where are the toilets?

Most of the small villages have public toilets and you can always pop into a cafe or hotel to use their facilities if need be. Bear in mind the villages are few and far between in this very rural area. We only saw two public toilets while travelling along the open roads, both were south of Ullapool.

Local Customs: Lots of dual signage for you to puzzle over

The Gaelic language is very much alive in Ross-shire and indeed most of the West Coast and the Western Isles. While we were in a pub in Ullapool we overheard the bar manager chatting to a friend on his mobile phone, it was amusing to here him hold most of his conversation in Gaelic mixing it with English when he needed a modern word. Most of the dual signs are in Gaelic as the first language like the tourist sign in Ullapool where it looked like there was loads to do. In case your wondering Sraid A Chladaich is in Gairloch and Buth Dhible maybe important to you it is the Off License in Poolewe just incase they take the English away at some point.

Local Customs: Common Grazing grounds & cattle grids ......

Common grazing grounds are areas where local crofters share land with Estates. Here they can raise a few sheep or many this is why you will notice many different breeds grazing together. The sheep are free to roam (free range sheep) and are controlled only by cattle grids. Funny name really as there are few cattle around these parts due to the rough landscape and lack of medows. Cattle grids are almost always accompanied by kissing gates and they have one more reason for being here - not only the sheep are controlled but also wandering deer are prevented from grazing in the locals gardens.
