Caledonian Hotel: A Set menu - but good food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Caledonian Hotel

The dining room in the Caledonian Hotel is large and uninspiring with little in the way of detail, flowers or decor. We had a drink in the comfy and cosy bar area before our meal and thought it a good place to eat not realising the meal would be served elsewhere.

Favorite Dish: The Caladonian is a large tourist hotel, open to non residents, which offers a set menu of 2 or 3 courses. There are three options on all courses - we had roast turkey with all the usual trimmings and three flavour ice cream. Service was quick and efficient if a little impersonal.

The Chippy: Fish & Chips to take away
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: The Chippy

Staying in self catering accommodation doesn't mean you have to cook I do this enough at home. We had two takeaway meals while away one from the Chippy and one from The Jade House Chinese takeaway. Although we had to travel the three miles into Ullapool, this wasn't a problem for us, we usually have to travel eight miles at home. After long days travelling and sightseeing this makes for a good and easy evening meal.

Favorite Dish: Both takeaways had the usual assortment of food to chose from. We obviously chose the fish and chips - local fresh fish cooked to perfection. From the Jade House I had fried beef with onion in an oyster sauce Kenny's choice was chicken in organge sauce rice was included in the price.

Millcroft Hotel: The Fish Box Bar comes at a high price
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Millcroft Hotel

I did love the Gaelic translation Am Bocsa Eisg a very pretty bar from the outside with its red fence and lovely windows. Inside was cosy in the little bar with nicely laid out tables and benched tables by the windows. In the middle of the bar they have a stove type log fire which heats this place nicely on all four sides. The staff are friendly and helpful and the Gairloch locals are always up for a chat.

Favorite Dish: We only had coffee here as it was still early in the day. The coffee was very welcome and served to our table. I nearly fainted when the barman said without flinching and with a smile that will be £5.00 please!! We did check out their menu and surprisingly main courses were between £8.00 and £10.00 Oh well maybe just an expensive brand of coffee here.

The tumbling water and the tumbling snow in Altan Dhub is spectacular. Have not seen like this before. Thanks Joan for sharing.

Ys, both Ullapool and Inverness are really nice; I still have at least two more pages to add but I don't know when, I added Santiago de C., Malta..., and next Monday I'll begin a new trip for 5 days. I'll have a look at your pages
