Royal Palace: Visit the Palacio Real de Madrid
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Royal Palace was one of the official residencies of King Juan Carlos but not any more. The Palace is still used for some State Occassions & Civil Ceremonies. The site of the Palace dated back to the 10th. Century. The present Palace was constructed in 1764 & designed by Sabatini and is the largest Palace in Western Europe. If you plan to visit the many rooms in the palace allow enough time & check before hand that it is indeed open to the public on the day you wish to visit.

Almudena Cathedral: Spain is a Roman Catholic Country visit her Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Cathedrals full name is Santa Maria la Real de la Almundena but it is usually listed in guide books as Almundena Cathedral. Construction of the Church began in the 1800's but work was not completed until 1993 when the Cathedral was consecrated by John Paul ll. The design began in the Gothic Revivial Style but was changed to Neoclassical style to match the Royal Palace. I particularly liked the stunning blue facade complete with the Statue. The Cathedral is a stunningly beautiful building with a uniquely modern interior.

Plaza de Oriente: Check out Madrid's Statues of Former Monarchs
  • Tip Rating:
  • The statues of former Spanish Monarchs line the pretty Plaza de Oriente, they were designed & build to go on the top of the Royal Palace but proved too heavy and were placed on plinths and adorn the Plaza. The Plaza was completed in the Rein of Isabel ll but Joseph Bonaparte was the rulling monarch when the design began. This place is very popular with tourists and locals alike - a great place to meet up with friends have a drink & sample some music from the many musicians who entertain you while you relax in this lovely atmospheric place.

Churches: Monasterio de la Descalas Reales
  • Tip Rating:
  • Monasterio de la Descalas (Descalaz) Reales started its life in the 16 centrury as a Palace but Dona Juana, Filipe ll sister decided it should be a convent. She would visit the convent shoe less to show her humility as do most of the Sisters today. The name Descalzas literally means shoe less. If you plan on visiting inside please arrive early to be at the head of the line - only a few visitors are permitted inside for a tour and you may have a long wait if you are at the end of a line.

Nice page Joan. We had 2 days Sept'08 at end 50 day visit to Europe. Did not see much, went to Prado museum, should have visited the Palace. Lost my ATM card. Must return.
