Things To Do: Franzis Kaner Kirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Franzis Kaner Kirche was constructed in 1480 in the style of late gothic. It began its Christian life as a Monastery Chapel for Augustine Monks. Much later in 1965 after years of closure it began a new life - being re dedicated to Saint Francis and the Franciscan Order> Today the Church is used for worship by the people of the town. The Church is open daily from 14.00 till 17.00 Services are held on Sunday at 9.00am and 18.00. A simple little Church both inside and out with two striking features - the statue adorned with white flowers set high up on the tower is worth seeing. My favourite was the shrine by the side door which shows Christ's passion and pain in the Garden of Gethsemane - a very moving and thought provoking shrine.

    Things To Do: Kehlsteinhaus
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Kehlsteinhaus - translated into English - Key Stone or re named in English as the Eagle's Nest holds a fascinating - if some what dark insight into the history of Word War ll. The house resembles a swiss chalet was commissioned by Martin Bormann as a gift to Adolf Hitler on the occassion of his 50th. Birthday. Built as a retreat and a place to entertain in September 1939 the house and the amazing road to it were completed in just thirteen months finishing in September 1939 . Although Eva Braun and her sister Gretl along with other high ranking party members and their families spent summer days here, Hitler him self visited only on about ten rare occassions - sometimes for as little as half an hour. Because of his lack of envolvement with the Kehisteinhaus it was saved from demolition at the end of the War. Up until 1960 the Eagle's Nest was used by the Allies as a military command post before being handed back to the state of Bavaria. Today it is not in anyway a memorial or any other tribute to Hitler but a restaurant complex managed by a charitable institution. Strange to think nothing structural has changed here in over sixty years except for the added terrace - one thing has changed here though - the number of visitors is incredible - no one told me the World and his Wife would be here too!!

Things To Do: I can see clearly now the rain has gone
  • Tip Rating:
  • We were really lucky to view the great peaks which surround the Kalhsteinhaus on a clear sunny day with virtually no clouds on the horizon to obscure our view. Although we were already standing at an elevation of 1834 metres the mountains made the Kalhstein seem so small in comparison. Spectacular views meet your eye from both sides to the left the valleys with Berchtesgaden in the distance - to the right the mighty peaks of Steinernes Meer, Walzmann, Hochkalter and Reiteralpe to name but a few. The stunning Lake Konigssee was also part of the big picture. The colours and hues were a wonderous sight - I will never forget the distant mountains almost disappear through a blue mist as we looked far into the horizon. I must revisit to learn more about these wonderous mountains and striking landscapes tbc

Things To Do: The Old Town of Berchtesgaden
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Old Town of Berchtesgaden's Markt Plaz is a pleasant place to stroll around in a traffic free environment. Although mainly given over to shopping, restaurants and guesthouses - the buildings are colourful and beautifully decorated - even if they are totally aimed at the passing tourist. I enjoyed seeing the pretty water fountain and the splendid murals displayed in some of the buildings windows. Stopping to brows the fruit stall I just had to buy some fresh peaches to eat in the sunshine and quench my thirst. There are public toilets here if like me you want a chance to freshen up - they are located in an entrance above the car park. My only regret was we didn't really have enough time here to explore further - Ah well reason enough to return.

Things To Do: Relax in the Park and listen to the band
  • Tip Rating:
  • While walking around Berchtesgaden we heard the sound of music, we decided to follow the sweet sounding melody. This led us to the local park where a band of school children were playing mostly brass instuments in the pavillion. Their rendition of traditional German tunes and a interesting mix of international tunes were totally captivating and very entertaining - produced perfectly by very young people was music to my ears. The park is a pleasant place to relax and unwind, wonderful summer flowers, sparkling water features and beautiful green hues greet the eye here a perfect spot to relax - re-wind and just chill.

i love the picture at the beginn this website (Kehlsteinhaus), at the top of the mountain! It is a great view to the landscape!

I was working out that I have been to the Kehlsteinhaus 6 times, the last time, I tried the walking option. It hurts just as much coming down as it does going up.

Excellent photo of the Eagle's nest. The views from up there must have been amazing. Sorry the tour was not the best.

This page brings back memories, both good and not so good ones. I love hiking in this area, but I didn't like having to repair our car with a wired coat hanger at the parking lot of Kehlsteinhaus.
