This old Ukrainian city, which sprung up on an island encompassed by branches of the Styr & Hluszets Rivers, was inhabited by the East Slavs in the 7th & 8th centures. Its name probably comes from the word "luka", which means the "bend", which the River Styr makes in that place, which in time lead to that name.
During the IX - XII centuries this city became the "capital" of the Western Volynia, or Volyn. At the same time, its future suburbs were populated: Hnidava, Krasne & Hmelnyk.
The first written mention of Luchesk, or Lutsk as being a dependable fortress of the Kiev state, is found in the Ipativ chronicle, dating from 1085.
The international influence of the capitol of Volyn in the 15th century is attested to by the congress of european monarchs held there in 1429.
