Instead of taking the short way we decided to visit the route of the Saxon churches and the Transfagarasan road. A long, long, way , no doubt, but nevetherless I would recommend it very much as it is beautiful and helps you a lot in understanding the country.

On your way, if you drive, you will find plenty of hitchhikers. It is up to you to pick up someone.
We did and I have to say that it was a pleasurable experience despite us not speaking Romanian and our guests not speaking English or anything else!

People use private cars as a form of transport as if they were taxis or buses. They just post themselves by the side of the road until some bus or car picks them up and later they offer you money for the ride.

Cows in Campulung

It is lots of fun to drive on countryside roads as you will always find cows coming towards you, or ducks crossing the road, hens taking care of their chicks and so on, and on, and on....

| was told by a friend that the reason you find cows on the road is because to save some money, instead of hiring a sheperd, some people will take the cows to the pastures themselves and leave them grazing there. The cows know the way back home and at dusk, well, they just come back on the shortest road ! just like rivers :-)
